Cards Sign Jason LaRue
Looks like we got our backup catcher...
Link Should also mention that we signed pitchers Dewon Brazelton and John Wasdin to minor league deals, things are really heating up!
What do you think, biggest signing we make all offseason?

So...
Seems like maybe a slight upgrade. Gary has hit better recently, but he was pretty poor behind the plate.

Optimism
wow
(assuming kelly stinnett, sandy alomar jr and sal fasano stay retired)
I dont mind this at all...
LaRue was tied with Pudge last year in the AL for throwing people out.

laRue's 2007 makes gary bennet look like an all-star

Wow...
Yep, he pretty much stinks. Funny thing about backup catchers though...they pretty much all stink.

nice roast
"LaRue slumped a bit to end the year, going 0-24 in August..."
Backup C
In '05 the guy put up an OPS over .800 in 361 AB's. He is the backup C and I doubt he sees much pt.
I'm not concerned with who the backup C is too much. He can handle himself behind the plate and has hit pretty well in the past.
This is what I don't get...why are we signing retreads like Brazelton and Wasdin? Don't we have enough pitchers who actually may contribute to the big team to fill out the AAA rotation?
That's something I've never liked...taking away playing time from guys that are have upside and giving it to guys who are filler at best?
I guess this means Boggs and Garcia start at AA?

At least...
(It's funny how the first move of the off-season for the Cardinals is almost always signing a backup catcher who can't hit his weight)
This is a nice move...
I bet he gets that OPS back above 600 and for a backup catcher theres nothing wrong with that.

Yeah dude
IsoD of .90 and IsoP of .170 for his career. He'll get 150 at-bats or whatever and I sure as hell am not going to try and predict a batting average for that.
He's got an 8% walk rate, he puts a ball into the seats every once in a while, and he can throw out a baserunner! That's like 7 more skills than Gary Bennett had.
Dewon Brazleton
(Looking at his stats.)
Be a bit more careful with David Price, Rays, eh?
Seems like we swapped
The money is technically the same as if we'd kept Bennett. Bennett's option was 900,000 but there was a 50,000 buyout, so exercising the buyout and paying LaRue 850,000 = 900,000 for a backup catcher.
While I normally meet minor league contracts with a shrug, and it's no different in this case. As far as I can figure Parisi is the only starter on Memphis's roster, so Boggs and Garcia should be getting AAA starts even with the addition of these two trash heap pickups.
With signing Larue
DeWitt said that payroll could push $110-115 M. Wonder who they are planing on dropping $10 M on?
Current Roster Matrix:

Pitchers' #s with LaRue behind the plate
The Royals allowed .277/.339/.445/.784 last year.
When LaRue caught the line was: .280/.346/.461/.807.
When I looked closer, though, I found that he only caught Gil Meche for seven at bats in one inning all season long. That might have been a part of why the numbers look pretty poor.
Bennett, on the Cardinals last year had a line that looked like this:
.280/.342/.444/.786
The Cardinals pitchers allowed this:
.271/.336/.431/.767
Bennett's numbers look much worse in comparison to the Cardinals' pitchers' overall #s. On closer look, our closest pitcher was Waino and Bennett caught him in 10 games and over 275 plate appearances. That is a large amount of time with the top pitcher on the team and the numbers were still much worse.
Anyway, that's my research for the day. Out of time. Happy Thanksgiving!
