Garland/O. Cabrera Trade

By now I am sure most of us have heard that the Angels and White Sox completed a trade sending Garland our west for Orlando Cabrera and some cash.  On the surface it seems pretty even, but the main thing that could be beneficial to us is that this now gives the Angels a ridiculous amount of starting pitching - some of which they could be looking to move for an impact bat.  My initial thought would be to work out a trade centering around Ervin Santana and Chris Duncan.  I am not sure though as to his contract status.  I only found that he signed a one year deal last March ('07).  However, I think this would benefit both teams.  While I know Santana did not have a great year last year, he is young, nasty, and he will eat innings.

What are everyone's thoughts??

Dream on....
The Angels are in on Miggy Cabrera and Santana and/or Saunders will be included on that deal. Angels seem to be focused on upgrading 3b and keeping Kotchman at 1st.

Too bad
Would love to see them flip Rolen to the Angels for Rolen.

What I heard was
that the two key pieces that the Marlins wanted from the Angels for Miggy were Howie Kendrick and Nick Adenhart.

Guess we'll see.

and...
Those 2 were the ones that Angels are more hesitant to give up. The starting points were I think Wood and Santana/Saunders plus the 2 you mention.

What about Uribe?
White Sox signed Uribe to a one-year 4.5 MM contract.  Is Juan Uribe really worth that much money to ride the pine?  I certainly don't think the White Sox would give up Garland for Cabrera to put him on the bench, either.

This has all the makings of a set-up move. I think Cabrera could be moving elsewhere...any guesses?

Or...
Uribe could move over to 2B.  Guess that makes more sense.

by lightbulb on Nov 19, 2007 2:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
My best bet is on Uribe sharing time with Richar as he builds himself up to a starting role.
On with the youth movement!

Uribe
I think the thoght is that the Sox are going to trade Uribe.  They actually signed him for less than expected so he can be traded to a team for some sort of minor league player.  He has such good tools he may get a decent minor league player.  Too bad Uribe can't fully use the tools he has.

Santana
wouldn't be bad, but I'd rather not trade Duncan for him. Santana had a horrible year last year . . . very similar to Reyes. Do you think another team would give up a player of Duncan's caliber for Reyes? Probably not, so why should we do the same for Santana?

aren't
the Sox about to lose Iguchi in free agency?

by The Butcher on Nov 19, 2007 4:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They traded Iguchi
To the Phillies during the season.

woops
I remember that now. Sorry

I think
this is preparing the Angels to make a run at Miguel Cabrera.  They'll replace O. Cabrera probably w/ Brandon Wood and trade pitching and others to the Marlins for Miguel Cabrera.

BTW, Duncan is way too much for Ervin Santana.  Now, if we also got Macier Izturis and tried him at SS -- that's worth considering.

by chuckb on Nov 19, 2007 5:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed....
Duncan is WAY too much to only get Santana in return.

However, how about this.

Duncan and Flores

for

Santana, Izturis/Aybar, and Shields

The Angels are real light from the left side in the pen, and Speier is more than capable of filling Shields shoes.

I'd rather have Aybar in the above mentioned deal.

why would a team trade for Flores
when they can pluck a generic LOOGY from the minors and get the same results?

by azruavatar on Nov 19, 2007 8:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

over value
I believe a lot of people over value the Cardinals talent be it MLB or minor league.

Chris Duncan

Question?
Would you trade Anthony Reyes, Hoffpauir/Ryan and Ryan Franklin for Nick Markakis and Brad Burres?

Why?
Well, as you can see he's obviously not the centerpiece of the deal.  Duncan is.  He's the reason they would be interested in a deal.

Flores is a throw in.

I'm not sure Flores would survive in the AL
and he's a fringe reliever in the NL.  I understand he isn't the centerpiece but after this year he'll be eligible for arbitration.

Flores...
He signed a two year deal after the '06 season.

right
so "after this year he'll be eligible for arbitration."  I hope the Cardinals dump him because he isn't worth more than 1M a year.

Hmmm...
I was thinking that he earned the right of free agency because he was signed to a multi-year deal while arb eligible.

I've been wrong many times though.

not unless there's a special clause in his
contract.  I was really surprised when they gave a 2-year guaranteed deal to him last year given how fringy of a reliever he is (even if it was just 1.8M dollars).  It looks like he was going to be a super-2.  Some Japanese players get those types of clauses in their contracts (Iguchi) but I'm pretty sure Flores will still be under team control.

Wrong Miguel
It'll be Miguel Tejada.

Im in agreement
that it should not be a straight up deal.  My thought was that those would be the key pieces to get the ball rolling.

Ground ball through the hole ...
I think Miguel Cabrera is the most underrated player in the majors, but a Miggy/Wood left side of the infield would be a horrific defensive alignment (worse than the Marlins' current state). It would give them a lot of pop, though, and finally move Garrett Anderson out of the cleanup spot. But that team has always valued defense, so it would be a change of pace.

Garland
Not to mention they just traded for a "ground ball" pitcher.  I think it would be in the Angels best option to have a solid defense around Garland.

Cabrera...
How is he underrated?

My thoughts exactly
How can a guy who has been called the next Manny Ramirez possibly be considered underrated?  ManRam is a moderately competent big league hitter of baseballs, no?

by redbirdnation8206 on Nov 21, 2007 1:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

With Cabrera gone...
...so much for my hopes of nabbing SS prospect Sean Rodriguez for Reyes, a reliever or two and a backup outfielder while the Angels were fairly deep in SS prospects.

The kid has a ways to go in holding down an MLB SS position, but the pop in his bat and raw talent was something to watch when The Travelers visited Hammons Field in 07'.

Keep Duncan...no Santana!

i agree
i saw him play for the Rancho Cucamonga quakes a while back and fell in love.  I think he makes more sense as a post-Scott Rolen 3B-man though.

Thats probably accurate...!!
...3rd base or a corner outfield spot?? He was one of a handful of opposition AA hitters thru the season that made the entire Redbirds defense start rockin back and forth on their feet when he came to the plate, had me rocking on the front of my seat.

Made some great plays and booted some routine stuff as well. Cuts down SOs, errors and hits a little more for average, he's worth ponying up to make a big trade for. A player for the next 6 years that will hammer the ball.
