3rd basemen
Now that ARod is off the market, per http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3112799 what do you all think will happen with the rest of the third base market?
Lowell will most definitely re-sign with Boston (that's my guess.) After that, does Crede stay in Chicago? Who knows...what do you think?

Outside of that I really have no clue.

Market
If you were/are a team that needs a 3B you would better at least put a feeler out for A Rod. After that it would be your best interest to look into Miggy. I guess from there some would argue that Lowell may be a good 3B to go after. Some people would say stay away from him.
Scott was not on the high priority list. He was hurt and was still at best the 3rd best option as a 3B. Crede is probably in a worse situation than Rolen. He had back surgery and missed all of last season, so who knows how he will be.
I don't think Scott is a hot item just because A Rod and Lowell look to be locked up. I would think Miggy is #1 and then from there it depends how desparate a team is. I see Rolen as a desparate option not a hot commodity.

LA or LA of A
Ned, on the other hand, can't wait to give his guys away for any established veteran. He's like Jocketty without the brains. If the Angels bag Miggy, I think they'd be pretty interested in Rolen. They were linked to him around the trading deadline last season, and they seem pretty intent on stupidly buying a vet to block their studly third base prospect.
I'm not saying it'll happen, but I'd be more than happy if we sent Rolen and a fair chunk of cash to the Dodgers in exchange for LaRoche. Add Reyes or Thompson maybe? Hell, they can have Allen Craig, too. Maybe he'll be ready by the time whatever high priced vet they sign hangs it up or leaves town.

I like this line
Tinseltown was all up in arms about seemingly everything DePodesta did there, and as far as I know he was the guy in charge when they got Loney, Kemp, Ethier, LaRoche, and Young. Bill "I'm an idiot" Plaschke went so far as to call the guy Google Boy, very mature indeed after all.
All Colletti has done is effectively block those guys with genius signings like Juan Pierre (OPS+ of negative 644) for 5 years and 44 million. The would have been better off taking that money and burning it, or perhaps buying 44 million dollars worth of funnel cakes, I don't know. To compound things they had Griddle Little managing with his head firmly in his ass, bolting James Loney to the pine while Nomar hit a double once in every other blue moon (until he absolutely had to play the kid, and holy shit he's actually pretty good, who'd a guessed?) and playing Luis Gonzalez as he did his best impersonation of, well, his octogenarian self. It would be like if LaRussa had Pujols and Rasmus come up in the same season and bolt them to pine for Scott Spiezio and Ray Lankford. Whenever I gnash my teeth about Tony (which has been more and more recently) I always think about three names: Grady Little, Dusty Baker, Norv Turner (the most incompetent of all incompetent coaches in all sports).

Pretty straightforward I'd guess
I don't think this opens the market for Scott, although it kinda depends on what Lowell signs for and whether Crede gets an extension on his deal and for how much and how many years. If Rolen's contract ends up being cheap, Mo might get some calls on him from teams like the Dodgers. If he ends up being cheap, however, it would probably be in the Cards best interest to keep him unless they could pry LaRoche from the Dodgers as was mentioned in a diary yesterday. I don't see that happening without the Birds giving up some young pitching or possibly Anderson as well, so I'd guess that Rolen isn't going anywhere and will be the opening day starter at third for the Cards.

....agree with your scenario...
And, if he stays to open the season, SOMEONE with prospects/$$ will want him for the stretch run and trading deadeline in Aug. He might WANT to go play with a contender. If hes stays healthy, puts up more typical Rolen numbers than 07'...he's worth a bunch of prospects then!
NY signing A-Rod must frustrate people that hate injured, aging (overpaid) vets (and SR). Particularly those that try to create all the negative drama they can by being hyper-critical of the drama between TLR and Rolen.

Overvalue Laroche
How about this one: Rolen and Ryan for Furcal and Laroche. (on this thing, I think the Cards may have to throw in more.)
by Elvis on Nov 16, 2007 9:25 AM EST 0 recs
Yep
Although the contract value is close in the exchange, LaRoche is a youngster with pop. Ryan is not. We prob would have the throw in someone.

LaRoche
I believe LaRoche may have had some injury issues in the past, but he's one of the, if not the, best 3b prospects in baseball right now. He's Team USA's hottest hitter right now, and that includes a certain guy named Rasmus who's tearing the cover off the ball right now.
Also, we wouldn't send them Anderson, they've already got Russell Martin for years to come.

And Nobody Thinks Tejada goes to 3B?
If Lowell resigns with the Sox, we may well see Tejada in Dodger Blue.
Either way I have Cabrera with the Angels, and Rolen stays put.

inexpensive approach
Alexei Ramirez if available to play SS(if not then Izturis), and Barajas to be back up catcher
then deal Rolen and $4mill/yr to the Twins for Scott Baker.
brings payroll to about $101 mill, leaving about $10 mill in payroll space and most of our dealable commodities (Duncan, Reyes, etc) to land a right-handed power outfield bat.
