(espn says) Beane says Haren is for sale

I was over at my Mistress Team's blog and they front paged this.  Think he'll go for a take back with Mulder?

ESPN reported that Billy Beane may make Dan Haren available to replenish the A's farm system.

Haren is under contract through 2010 at $4M in '08, $5.5M in '09, and a club option $6.75M in '09.

The question then is what would the A's want back for him.  Boston Globe has reported that the A's would require Clay Bucholz or Jon Lester from the Red Sox.  Who would you be willing to part with to make this deal?

[editor's note, by jscape2000] front paged by jscape2000

He'll be 27 years old in 2008 and has pitched more than 200 innings each of the last three years, to a 1.2 WHIP. While he's among the most underrated pitchers, I'm not sure he's worth a member of the Trinity.
I'd trade Haren for Betances and cash- and that's saying quite a lot. Otherwise, Horne and Whelan, or a similar package.

I'd give as much for Haren as I would for Santana.

So it sounds like they want pitching
The Cardinals have no young pitchers who are at the Clay Bucholtz or Jon Lester level.

I don't think STL stands a chance in this sweepstakes.

They might as well just ignore the idea.

He never should have LEFT home...
But there's no need to get into all that again.

Yeah, but
let's be honest. It'd be beyond idiotic for the A's to trade Haren considering the contract he has.

Horne and Whelan..
No way would that go down.  Horne is solid, but I think Whelan will be a set-up man at best.  Buchholz and Lester are far better than any Cardinals pitching prospects, except maybe Jaime Garcia (who is nowhere as good as Buchholz).

It's classic Beane
He just had a great season in which he was in contention for the Cy...now he's going to package him off to another team for two good young pitchers who are under team control so that Oakland can keep being good enough to win but not good enough to contend for years.  This is what I don't want to see in the St. Louis organization.

The A's
They made the playoffs for four straight years from '00-'03 and have made the playoffs in 5 of the last 8 years.

Not too shabby of a run.

yeah
The Orioles have spent tons of money over the years and when was the last time they made the playoffs?  1996?

Um...huh?
"...Oakland can keep being good enough to win but not good enough to contend for years."

The A's went to the ALCS in 06 and have won 740 games since the 2000 season, all with a budget the size of Alex Rodriguez's and Derek Jeter's combined annual salaries.  The playoffs have a very large luck component (ie balls landing fair/foul by an inch, a horrible ump, etc.) and so I would argue being one of the best teams of this decade IS contending.

Blanton
Joe Blanton may also be available, according to Ken Rosenthal.  He's not as good as Haren, but he's pretty solid.  We'd have a better chance to get him instead of Haren.  Either way, we would probably have to trade Rasmus for either/or, so we should probably pass.

He's 3 years from free agency
therefore, probably worth more than Santana. Santana's a better pitcher but 3 years of Haren is better than 1 of Santana. He'd be worth quite a bounty. We don't have it.

Bad move
I think Haren's value is peaked.  Beane realizes this and so he wants to move him.  Buy low, sell high- thats how he got Haren in the first place and that is how he will get Haren's replacement.

Well
Beane would see value in Reyes so

Reyes, Mather and Octavio?

That's two pitchers and an OF just what he wants.

Not to mention that with that ballpark he would know that it's 50/50 Reyes would outpitch Haren.

i'd be for it
but i wouldnt give up much. billy boy bent the Cards over with the Mulder deal, so if i'm MO,
i tread lightly if billy boy calls me up. i'd give up no more than some A ball players.

fool me once, shame on you.

fool me twice shame on me.

MO cant afford to be stupid this winter. letting billy boy have his way with the Cards farms system
AGAIN would be more than stupid.

it'd be catastrophic.

beane says haren is for sale
just say no trading with beane

by cm1000 on Nov 11, 2007 8:08 PM EST reply actions

Makes no sense
It makes no sense for the A's to do this for one young player.  If they filled various needs (even if it wasn't with players as good as HAren then it would make more sense.

Beane wants to make sure he gets more than a
few calls.  He probably meant to say Harden instead of Haren......If he's trading Haren, the first question out of my mouth is what's wrong with him?  Sorry, but Beane is a little too slick.  I'd be very, very, careful here.

by jillsinmo on Nov 11, 2007 10:20 PM EST reply actions

I honestly
Think it's nothing more than selling a guy that hit his peak.  He's gotta think some teams are gonna jizz themselves over getting him even though it's very unlikely he'll perform like that again.
