Why?

Dear Diary,

On a long drive over the weekend, I had the privilege of listening to Cubs and Brewer fans bemoan their fate on sportstalk radio.  Which got me thinking...

  1. Why was Albert cemented in the 3 hole when the bats behind him didn't really scare anyone? Don't we want to protect Albert?
  2. Like the Brewers, did our bullpen wear down as much as one may think?  They brought up the point of 2nd half ERAs being a lot higher than 1st half.
  3. Kerry Wood and Mark Prior are free agents.  I don't think we'd want them, but Prior may be worth a minor league contract.
  4. Who agrees with me that Rolen should hit in the 2 hole or at least in front of Albert, especially if there is an expected power decrease upon his return?
  5. Is the National League Central going to be that bad again?  Methinks the Brewers, especially if they can get better defensively in the OF, get one starting pitcher (Capuano blew), and better output from the catcher, are going to be miles ahead of the rest.  Big ifs, but they have the potential to be better next season with a minimal amount of fixing compared to what else I see in the NL Central.
Just me thoughts on a Monday with no meaningful baseball for 180 days.

Point #4
I agree.
Well, let's go to the old mill anyway -- get some cider!

Prior?
No way.  He's done.  His velocity is worse than Mulder's.

True
But wouldn't you be ok with spending a small amount of someone else's money to see if a different set of pitching coaches can fix him?
Cardinals Jayhawks all the way.

Nope.
If we can't fix Mulder, we can't fix Prior.  His mechanics are really bad now, even for him.  He's not using his legs or torso (a la Mulder) which is why his velocity is tanked.  Hell, even Mulder touches 90 now and again; Prior can't do that anymore.

Good points.
Albert in the 3 spot- where else are you going to bat him?  The issue of protection is going to creep up no matter where you put him; the rest of the lineup, (especially at certain points in the year) was all weak.

Bullpen- I agree, they probably did wear down a little.  A couple of the guys pitched way over their heads in the first half, though, (Franklinstein, I'm looking at you) and were due for a little bit of a comedown.  Plus, by the time the pen really had a rough patch, the season was pretty much done anyhow, and I think there may have been a little bit of a letdown factor there too.

Wood and Prior- I wouldn't have a huge problem with the Cards offering either one of them an insignificant deal.  Bring in Wood, install him in the pen, and see if he can handle that workload.  Prior would be OK on a minor league deal.  I don't expect him to be good again; too many injuries and bad mechanics, but I think it would be worth a shot.  You don't have much of anything to lose with the guy.

Rolen at 2- it's an interesting idea, and, surprisingly, one that I have no real feelings on one way or the other.

the Central- No, it won't be this bad for very long, I don't think.  You're finally seeing the doormats of the division, (Pirates, Reds) starting to put together some pretty good young talent bases, and the Brewers have already got their base.  2009, this division looks like a potential monster.  I hope the Cardinals don't get eaten.

Free to a good home.

The Pirates have been putting together
'good young talent bases' for 7 years now and they haven't gotten any better.  Jason Bay is going to be traded, Morgan and McClouth aren't the answers in the OF and Zach Duke forgot how to pitch.  Ronnie Paulino is a terrible catcher.

They are a mess.

Call up PJ Walters!

Wood was hitting 97mph
on national television.  Someone's gonna offer him significant money.

Prior is done.  Forget about him.

I would not assume that Prior is "done"
I'm not sure I would want to offer him a contract, but with time off with surgery don't you have to relearn your mechanics?  Muscle memory is erased after a long lay off isn't it?  If he has healed properly, and wants to return, won't he make the necessary adjustments?  Say what you will about him, but he has always been a competitor.  He's just 27 and I expect someone will take a flyer on him.

Someone
will take a chance on him.  But he's pretty much done.  He's lost at least 10mph on his fastball.  If Prior ever comes back - big if - it's gonna be awhile.  Dude's mechanics are shot.

Now Wood?  He's worth a look.  Unfortunately, I think the Cubs will keep him.

Prior?
Why not take a flyer on Prior? Didn't we do the same thing with Carpenter? Someone who was projected as having a huge upside but ran into arm problems? Sounds about right to me.

by JShell73 on Oct 9, 2007 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carp
was a complete reclamation project.  He'd never had success, really, and he'd had several injuries.  And Carpenter's upside was never considered as high as Prior's.

Prior was a top-tier starter who was over-used in his youth.  His mechanics were horrible.  He's destroyed his arm.  And now, his already poor mechanics are even worse.

I'm just wondering how the Cardinals organization can fix Mark Prior when they can't fix Mark Mulder.  Mulder's mechanics aren't even as bad as Prior's.

Besides, Prior hates the Cardinals.  I can't see him ever playing here.

Have you seen him pitch this year?
My understanding is he was shut down in April and underwent surgery, and was not expected to return until next spring at the soonest.  Did I miss something?  Where has he been pitching?  The Cards would not be the place for re-working mechanics.  I'd say the Mets and their ability to get Pedro back on the mound might make a better fit for Prior if the Cubs are done with him.

  1.  Albert was cemented in the 3 hole b/c you always want your best hitter to hit in the first inning.  It wouldn't have mattered where else he would have hit b/c there was no one to protect him, with the exception of Duncan before August started.  The problem there wasn't with where Pujols was hitting, it was with the other guys around him not being very good.
  2.  I think that there was some regression out there, but I think tiredness had a big part in the situation too.  Pitching out of the 'pen wears you down in different ways than starting does, and having to pitch almost every day is kind of rough on bullpen guys.
  3.  Prior is done.  Even if he does get healthy enough to throw again, it's likely he won't be throwing mid-90s anytime soon.
  4.  Hitting Rolen in the 2 hole isn't a bad idea at all.  It all depends on what the makeup of the team is next year.  If Duncan and Rolen are  healthy, I think a 234 of Rolen-Pujols-Duncan looks pretty fearsome.  It would be interesting to see if Tony/New Manager would be willing to try it out.
  5.  I have to agree with you on this one.  The Brewers's position players are frighteningly good in my mind.  It's the pitching staff that's the question mark for them.  Sheets is turning into their Mark Prior ("wait 'til he's back, then we'll show you!").  Capuano had a wretched year.  Gallardo is promising though.  I think the Crew will be a force to be reckoned with for several years to come.

3 and 4 I agree on for sure
Prior and Wood, if they can be signed to a minor-league deal, would definitely be worth a shot.  Wood, showing that he can relieve, would even be worth a shot for a setup role, as long as the years/dollars were right.

Rolen in the 2 spot sounds like a good idea to me.  Even in 2005, when he was back, but had no power, he was a very good singles hitter.  If the power never comes back, his days of being a 4-5 hitter may be done, but he can still put the bat on the ball and probably knock 10 or so HRs out a year, which sounds pretty good for a 2 hitter.

I also agree on #5.  I think the Cardinals, by 2009, will be much improved over this last campaign.  The Brewers are already good, and with experience and more pitching, they'll only get better.  I don't expect the Cubs to stop spending money anytime soon, and even if they do, their list of all-star calibre players ensures them, even in a bad year, to be in sniffing distance of .500.  Cincy seems to get enough talent to come up and scare everyone about every 3-4 years.

Houston is on the downslope and Pittsburgh, with their current GM, I would expect to still suck, pretty much.  The other four teams all have a reasonable shot in 2008 and 2009 though.

I love Kerry Wood
But somehow it just wouldn't be right if he wasn't a Cub.  I hope he stays with them, and I hope he pitches well.  He's been about as high and as low as you can go--it's nice to see his modest success this year.
