Here is hoping the Cubs win!

I live in Chicago.  This is going to make me sound evil.  I was raised to hate only one thing on this earth and that is the "organization" known as the Chicago Cubs.  But today, when I should be happy at their demise, I am dissapointed.  Why?  Because all of the Cubs fans have lowered their expectations.  As I walk around town today I hear a litany of excuses like:

Eh, we really don't have enough bats. (this is BS)
Pinella is crazy for taking Zambrano out. So our manager is an idiot. (sorta true)
Lilly was pitching on three days rest. (yes that is right)
etc...

Gawd, Cubs fans are pathetic. Which is why I need them to win a couple games.  I need the Cubs fans that I work and live with to have hope, so that hope can be dashed by the tramatic seemingly random event (ie bartman) that will leave them talking about how they are losers for years to come.

BTW, they skinned a goat and hung it from Harry Carey's statue.

Seriously, how does it feel to be cursed by a goat?

Yeah
All you guys who picked the Cubs are looking fairly foolish now.  I never really got this....the Cubs are the worst team in the playoffs.  When you combine that with Pinella pitching his guys on short rest, this result is not unexpected.  We will see how they respond in Wrigley, but the D-Backs have pretty much destroyed them.

Nothing petty about it...I just don't like the Cubs and while I do not wish them ill will, I also will never root for them to win.  Ever.

Let me get this straight...Rowand over Pujols??? Really, Tony?

Wouldn't say we were crazy
Cubs have the best 1-2-3 starters in the playoffs, and they had a better Pythagorean record than their actual record indicated (and the Dbacks worse).  Nate Silver agreed:  http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6781

Anyway, maybe you're right in that we were crazy not to account for Sweet Lou's mistakes.  Pulling Zambrano after 85 pitches was a mistake (though going to Marmol as first choice was not).  Maybe starting Lilly on 3 days was a mistake.

Oh, and the series isn't over yet.

I don't think
the Cubs have a better 1-2-3 than the Indians, or the Red Sox, or maybe even the Angels.

....you might be right
The wandering spirits of both goats will be accused once again of stinking up the stadium and offending Cubs fans, thereby causing the ghost of Mr Sianis to write another "Who Stinks Now" letter to Wrigley management after the Cubs drop this playoff series. It never ends, ghosts can do all that! Yep!

They deserve to lose
why skin a goat?  Is that a sacrifice to the gods or something?  Aren't the Incas dead?

I know right...
...I was listnening to an interview of the guy that did this morning on my commute.  He and his friends apparently ate the heart, liver, kidneys, etc.

They'll have gout
to go along with heartache.

(Unless they come back to win. Then they'll have to do it again next series.)

Gout...
...would be the least of their worries.  I am pretty sure they have severe mental issues.

by BigJawnMize on Oct 5, 2007 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously
are they going to press charges for that?  Not only is it disgusting and unsanitary, I doubt the kind of people willing to do this were humane in their slaughtering.  Sick fucks.

by spants on Oct 5, 2007 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They didn't slaughter it and they didn't skin it
From what I've heard on the radio, they bought it from some ethnic market, already dead, already skinned.

There's YouTube footage of the cops cutting down the carcass. They seemed a little more bemused than you'd expect a fellow to be on catching that assignment.

...goats in general......
Wouldnt eating goat meat that represented the aforementioned cursed goat somehow perperpuate the dreaded curse even further and bring back the restless and vengeful spirits of BOTH goats back to haunt and wander the Friendly Confines for another eternity! (I hope!)

Hanging it from Harrys statue may have added even more bad mojo to the curse as punishment for Harrys mispronouncing Tom Pagnozzis name 4 different ways in one single at bat. In spite of Steve Stone trying to bail Harry out by pronouncing it loudly the correct way right after Harry, who never caught the lead. The Curse of Pagnozzi!

Lilly
threw 2 innings on Sunday.  That shouldn't have ruined him for last night.  And if it did, it was Piniella who decided to have him pitch 2 innings Sunday -- they didn't need him to pitch in order to make the playoffs.

If that was an issue, they could've used Hill.  Lilly was f-awful last night but I seriously doubt his 2 inning stint on Sunday had anything to do w/ it.

I still think the Cubs will win the series -- I don't want them to but I think they will.

you're right
but i'm not rooting for the cubs.

the cubs aren't winning the series
and i'm not rooting for them to win a single game. i hope they get swept and then i hope they don't make another postseason for the remainder of all those contracts they signed in the offseason. that will serve them right for trying to be the yankees.

(who am i kidding? i hope they don't make another postseason for the remainder of EVER. but the buying-a-championship thing is the specific reason right now.)

Hello, playoff watching

Lose cubs lose
I have to admit that though I have been happy to see Arizona win these games, I have felt the tug of pity at my heart strings because my brother is a cubs fan.  Don't ask me how it happened other than that we lived in Chicago for 3 years and he always has been the rebellious type.  Other than that, I'm all for their demise.  That goat is ridiculous.

The goat thing is kind of sick...
But I am still disturbed by the number of Cardinals fans who take please in the misery of the small bears and their fans.

Wait
the goat thing is only "kind of sick" but what really disturbs you is the pleasure Cardinals fans take from the failure of their rivals who also do not wish them well?  So I could go get a skinned animal and hang it from a statue, but if I smile to myself as Chris Young hits a 3 run bomb or chuckle as Ted Lilly throws his glove down like a Little Leaguer then I am "disturbing?"

I must be one sick bastard, cause I am loving the Cubs going down, and I especially love all the ESPN experts picking them; victims of their own hype.

...Lilly! Cubs go down!
Im right there with you Cardsfan24 on this one!!

And everybody that says Lilly was overlooked as talent the Cards could have picked up need to remember the guy was "declared uncoachable" by both his Mgr. and Pitching Coach Arnseberg in Toronto in 06. Maybe thats not what Dunc and TLR wanted (if it is or isnt true)?

I'm with ya
cf24. I live in a hive of Cubdom and have experienced years of their extreme pleasure at our previous failures to get to and/or win a WS. Last year damn near killed them, as the old saw, "Well, you guys are nothing but post-season chokers" was finally laid to rest. Sorry, Zubin, but if you find our pleasure in another potential Cub collapse odd or disturbing, I'd say you must be lucky enough to live somewhere where you don't have to deal with Cubfans on a daily basis. I "hate" the Cubs in the same way I "hate" certain foods. It's pretty low in my priorities of life, but when they're right in my face, I'd rather see them in a garbage can. Go Snakes!!

Hmmmm....
I dunno, but I took what you wrote exactly the way cf24 did. Saying the goat thing is "kind of sick," (which indicates a less than serious concern) but you're "disturbed" (which indicates a very serious concern) about how many Birdfans wish failure to the Cubs seems pretty clear to me. How did he (or I) twist that?

I agree
and I cetainly didn't twist it 180 degrees.

Live anywhere within 90 minutes of Chicago.....
...because their fans up here are obnoxious.  The White Sox fans, when they won the World Series, gloated less than Cubs fans do about winning the NL Central with 85 wins (and that includes Cubs fans that don't even know I'm a Cardinals fan).

I, of course, always rooted for the Cubs demise in the playoffs, but it was never to the level that I have since I've moved up here to the outer 'burbs.

by mtalken on Oct 6, 2007 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Cub fans
are their team's single worst enemy.  The constant public pissinig and moaning and irrational behavior exemplified by the goat carcass have to enter into the player's heads and affect their play.  They (the players) aren't deaf, dumb and blind and they likely know the team's history as well as any Cubs fan.

Hey, I love cabrito, but hanging that skinned goat off of Carey's statue is repulsive and reflects a disturbed mentality on the part of whoever did it.  How sad.

Hard to like the current Cubs
I just can't get myself to root for Soriano/Lee/Ramirez/Big Z/Floyd/Lilly and the rest of the Piniella crew.

It started for me when Dusty Baker came to Chicago and brought in this smug like attitude to their organization and it's still there today.

Now 18-20 years ago when they had guys like Sandberg, Dawson, Grace, Zimmer, and even Harry in the booth, I never really "hated" or "disliked" the Cubs back in those days. They were a very likeable team that I could see myself rooting for in the playoffs. They were a classy group then and in turn their fans were alot more "fun" and "easy going".

Things have changed to a more "darker" tone in Chicago in terms of the team and the fans in my opinion over the last 8 years or so.

beyond obnoxious: psychologicalliy damaged
I am in total misery living in Chicagoland for the last 13 years.  What I bring from my StL upbringing is not a learned hatred of the team or fans, but a sense of what it really means for a city to support its team.  This city is sick, and I think that deep down inside they do not want the team to win -- they  put so much energy and so many words into their mythology of a century of losing, goats, a crumbling ivy encrusted slum, and the entire sense of being thwarted by arbitrary and capricious forces beyond the comprehension of Man.

If the Cubs won the series there would be a psychological cave-in of unprecedented proportion.  Millions of people would have to face the fact that they have a franchise that has lowered everyone's expectations to the point of it being a matter of civic identity.  Look at how comfortable they were booing their own team in the first (and only) home game of the series.

On the other hand this city loves a winner: the Sox, Bears, Bulls -- until say the middle of the next season when they are not producing.  The "what have you won for me lately" attitude stands between the present and Chicago being a truly great baseball city.  Obviously I need to vent, but if you don't name it for what it is then you start to think that what you see and breathe is real or even the norm -- nope, this is a truly bad sports town.  Somebody send me a ticket out.
