Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Roesnthal thinks Antonetti might bail....

I hope it's not true but he does make some good points.  I really don't want to see anyone else running this show.

Rosenthal wrote:
Antonetti: In or out?

White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Cardinals' GM position. The question now is whether Indians assistant GM Chris Antonetti will do the same.

Antonetti is the Cardinals' top choice, but the Indians are trying to keep him, according to major-league sources. One way to do it would be to pay Antonetti like a GM. Another would be to assure Antonetti that he eventually would succeed Mark Shapiro, who could move up to club president.

The Cardinals are telling candidates that they would operate with full autonomy, but the reality might be quite different. Manager Tony La Russa and some of the team's top baseball executives are under contract for at least two years. The rise of Jeff Luhnow, vice-president of amateur scouting and player development, led to the departure of GM Walt Jocketty.

If Antonetti rejects the Cardinals, it would increase the chances of interim GM John Mozeliak being named to the position on a more permanent basis. Mozeliak, who was assistant GM under Jocketty, already has working relationships with La Russa and Luhnow.

I think it'll be about the $...
and how badly Antonetti wants to be a GM right now! I can see where Cleveland would want to sweeten the pot to keep the guy; but much may depend upon whether Antonetti felt like he could "mesh" with Luhnow, Mozeliak, and La Russa.

I think the ChiSox' assistant "dropping out" just means he wasn't gonna get the job anyway... make it look like you turned the club down, and not like they didn't wanna hire you!

i like Rosenthal
but there isn't anything to this tidbit of info.   he's just stating the obvious, that the indians are trying to retain Antonetti, shouldn't come as a surprise.

just like most private companies
"What would it take to get you to stay?"

"I dunno, I really like the possibilities of this new job - new challenges, new horizons, etc. And the company I'm going to work for is phenomenal and has a fantastic tradition of excellency"

"How about a 10% raise and the potential for advancement in a few years?"

"I'm getting 20% and advancement right now."

"15%?"

"....maybe you didn't understand what I was saying"

"17%?"

"...right...bye..."

I guess that was a bit low...

But it still brings up the same thing
that larry has been talking about: lunhow's portrayal in the media.

There are two schools of thought: Jeff is being constantly being brought up as a problem because his presence is what ultimately got Walt fired (Walt's poor reaction to it) and the media types are protecting their old friend Walt.

The other school is that it IS a problem for any new GM, not having complete control over the farm system.

Rosenthal
I would say Rosenthal is a lot more reliable source than Bernie, whose word we've been hopelessly clinging to as some sort of inside truth.

rosenthal
usually is more often right then wrong. i'm getting really discouraged about this whole thing. if it is mozeliak, i think we may spend a decade or so in the toilet, sorry for the pessimism. i just have no faith in mo. we need someone like CA, i wish the indians would just back off!

by erik on Oct 31, 2007 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

true
he is more often right but this is all speculation it seems, fairly obvious stuff as well, he needed something to make the white sox guy withdrawing into a story people would read.  CA might back out but who knows.  Also I read that the GM meetings start this weekend so I would expect an announcement today or tomorrow airport sightings are probably going to go wild soon.

Freakin great...
It shouldn't come down to Antonetti or Mozeliak. DePodesta is sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. What about the Diamondbacks Asst. GM?

If the Cards start making more Pineiro-type moves it'll be hard to stay on board.

Ease LaDunketty out gently, thank him profusely, and... Hire Antonetti!!!

lack of faith in Mo
means a lack of faith in Lunhow.  Lunhow, with Mo as GM, has almost complete authority over the farm system and the drafting process.  The two work well together.

So, to believe that Mozeliak is going to put the team in the toilet is to believe that a) lunhow will fail at replinishing the farm system b) Mozeliak will fail at signing 6 year minor league free agents and c) Mozeliak will lock the team into a bunch of bad contracts.

Seeing as Walt's inability to work out deals with Edgar Renteria and AJ Burnett damaged this team greatly, I'd prefer a GM who can work out deals.

I'd also, probably prefer, Antonetti, though too.

per bernie
Hahn withdrew because he wasn't going to be offered the job ... the Cardinals have also interviewed DePodesta ... But all indications are it is down to Antonetti and Mozeliak ... I trust Rosenthal in his report on Antonetti haven't second thoughts because Cleveland trying to keep him; Ken is close to Mark Shapiro and gets great info from him ... Only thing that seems strange to me is the idea that Antonetti would succeed Shapiro when the time comes ... Shapiro is a young man. It ain't like he's headed to retirement or the board room (like Schuerholz in Atlanta) anytime soon... I know more but can't talk now (media poachers)... Will let you know when it's time (sorry).

Gosh, Bernie and his perpetual teases of inside info.  I just want to pull of his mask and let the world know he is M. Night Shamalamamama DING DONG.

He would have gotten away with it too....

and my 2 cents
i thought he whole "promise he'll succeed him" thing sounded weird too, like how old is Shapiro, like 38-40? and why are they not higher on depo? i'm glad they interviewed him, but why not get him if he's interested. i wish they would do something, because it's getting a little late to still be just deciding. if bernie knows more, and gives rosenthal his due, then in all likelihood he knows that he ain't comin' and he just can't say anything yet.

my disconent o meter is continuing to rise.

by erik on Oct 31, 2007 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

It's quite possible...
Mozeliak will just be a straw man for Luhnow's ideas and methods... that he'll the Dennis Hastert to Luhnow's Tom DeLay.

The question here is who will really have Dewitt's ear if Mozeliak is retained.

I assume that Bernie
believes he will get scooped on his own scoop by someone from another paper, website, etc. reporting his forum posting as fact or using his info and saying they have 'inside information'.

But in reality, he's just fluffing himself.

at teh same time...
if he's close to shapiro and shapiro really wants to keep him, what kind of info do you think shapiro is going to be giving rosenthal? Remember who this information is coming from on both ends - ultimately 1 person - who's goal is to retain antonetti.

When is everyone...
going to boycott Bernie Miklasz?  I mean, seriously, this guy builds himself up to sound like he has all of these special little insights.  How many insights does he have left after he tried to pick a fight with a Major League manager last season?

Personally, I'm sick of the guy.  We need someone who is credible without being an elitist about his information.
