Marcus Giles released

Marcus Giles was released by the padres today. I would like to see the Cardinals inquire about getting him, an infield of Ryan at SS and Giles at 2b would be pretty decent. I can't imagine Giles asking for more than a few million dollars per year. The only problem with this is that it still leaves the Cardinals without a true lead off hitter. In any case I think he would be a good fit in St. Louis.

No thanks
His OPS the past 3 years: .826, .728, .621.  Dropped 100 points a year.  No reason to have 2 Adam Kennedys on the team.  I'd much rather take my chances with Jarrett Hoffpaiur.

Marcus Giles isn't very good.
We already have a second baseman who isn't very good.

and is old
and is paid more than Hoffpauir.

And if the Padres don't even have a spot
for him.....they desperately need offense.  If there was any chance he could help in that way, they would not set him loose.

Sure, and bring Spivey to camp too
Tony can have another scrap heap competition to anoint the second baseman.  And from that group Miles wins again.  Yech!!

I sure hope that Kennedy shows up this year and plays like we hoped for.  Could even be another candidate for comeback player of the year.  Of course he'll have to compete with Mulder, Rollen, Carp, .....

Watching the Playoffs as Reigning Champs is not a bad thing.

he might have to compete with Albert too
i would laugh if albert were considered in line for that award.
i would cry with happiness if jimmy were.

Great...
we can collect awful second baseman each making a few million dollars a year... I'm confident Kennedy can post a .650 ops next year.
Ease LaDunketty out gently, thank him profusely, and... Hire Antonetti!!!

Giles would be good for one purpose...
If the Cards were to sign Giles, it would be sweet if they were to also bring back Spivey, and get Pokey Reese too.  Kennedy, Giles, Spivey, Miles, and Pokey (awesome name, isn't it?, that's really the whole reason he's in this discussion) could have a battle royale of has-been second basemen, a steel cage match perhaps.  My guess is that Giles would win b/c he's a pretty buff little dude, but also b/c he would land a metal chair to the head of the Miles to finish the fight...Miles lasted that long b/c he was so short everyone missed him, even though he was running around biting everyone else's ankles.

Yeah Giles is on a pretty steep downward slope.  He's old beyond his years, his bat speed has dropped to the point that he makes Edmonds look like Barry Bonds, and he never really was much of a fielder.  He's only played 150 games once.  Now, the 2003 version of Giles would be nice to have...sadly that guy is long gone.

why not worth a look?
i think it's worth checking what's still in his tank, if he costs us little guaranteed money and if TLR doesn't allow him to block some of the younger options (ryan, hoffpauir, or whoever) if giles' isn't producing.  for my money, i'd rather see what marcus giles can do for us rather than watching aaron miles (although he was awesome last year). as for his defense, i'd be interested to see what the dave duncan of infield defense (jose oquendo) could do with him.
