Aaron Rowand?
if this rumor is true, i don't even know what to think of this organization anymore.
With the possibility of a run at Aaron Rowand looming, the Cardinals are undecided about using Jim Edmonds as a center fielder next year.
(Updated 10/13/2007)
Center field is no higher than fourth when it comes to positions the Cardinals should be looking to address. There are bigger needs at shortstop, second base and right field. Edmonds can still handle center when healthy, and when he's not, Rick Ankiel can fill in. However, the biggest reason why it makes little sense to go long-term on a new center fielder is top prospect Colby Rasmus, who should be ready to take over the position in 2009.
i definately agree we need to fill holes at short, but we are probably stuck at second base with Kennedy since we gave him the deal we did. and i guess rotoworld doesn't see Ankiel as our everyday right fielder either. and we need pitching. seriously, Aaron Rowand, this is a sick belated april fools joke, right?

You can't trade Rasmus but...
You can't tell me that a Rasmus/Duncan/Reyes for Johan offer wouldn't at least be one of the best out there. Remember, there is a good chance the Twins will lose their center fielder this year and Duncan would be the DH they've been looking for (they've got Liriano coming back and a ton of other good starting pitching).
If you added Rowand (to replace Duncan), it might even be one to give you pause (can you imagine a Santana, Carpenter, Wainright trifecta in the playoffs next year?).
You can't say the Cardinals don't have the pieces to make a Santana deal work (though I don't see a scenerio that would allow us to stay within our budget constraints). Hell, you wouldn't even have to give up Rasmus if Wainright were involved (which I don't advocate).
I know this season is doom and gloom, but we actually have a few nice young players to build around. Our problem isn't our young players, it's that our holes for 2008 are extremely hard to fill (league average shortstop, league average lead off hitter, #1 or #2 starter, healthy and productive CF and 3B, league average 4th and 5th lineup position production), and it will take some creativity and luck to do it without screwing our budget (good luck new GM).

Shoot if...
Of course, if in my little hypothetical dream world this were to happen, I would refer to Bill Simmons's rules on when you could officially divorce your team and I would do so...Probably adopting the Cleveland Indians as my new team b/c Pedro Cerrano was always one of my favorite players. Boy that kid could hit a fastball...

Rowand
The talk coming out of the organization about Rowand and trying Ankiel in center does make me wonder about whether they are considering a trade involving Rasmus. If so, I hope it would be Santana and not Willis. As Gary Coleman used to say "what you talkin' 'bout, Willis?"
