Aaron Rowand?

if this rumor is true, i don't even know what to think of this organization anymore.

With the possibility of a run at Aaron Rowand looming, the Cardinals are undecided about using Jim Edmonds as a center fielder next year.
(Updated 10/13/2007)

Center field is no higher than fourth when it comes to positions the Cardinals should be looking to address. There are bigger needs at shortstop, second base and right field. Edmonds can still handle center when healthy, and when he's not, Rick Ankiel can fill in. However, the biggest reason why it makes little sense to go long-term on a new center fielder is top prospect Colby Rasmus, who should be ready to take over the position in 2009.

i definately agree we need to fill holes at short, but we are probably stuck at second base with Kennedy since we gave him the deal we did. and i guess rotoworld doesn't see Ankiel as our everyday right fielder either. and we need pitching. seriously, Aaron Rowand, this is a sick belated april fools joke, right?

Only makes sense if...
Rasmus is going to be used to acquire big league talent.  I know we're supposedly nurturing the system, but some things you just can't pass up.  If Rasmus makes it go for Johan, then welcome aboard Aaron.

I don't know about you
but I wouldn't want to give up our top prospect to aquire yes a great pitcher, but a great pitcher that has only one year left on his contract and a great pitcher we can't afford. But on the Rowand topic, I just don't see it.

I wouldn't worry about it....
This team will not trade away Rasmus, he is just to vital to the system and is the future for the cardnals orginization.  Furthermore if you think that the cards would ever be able to aquire johan then keep dreaming.  It just won't happen.  To many other teams can offer a colby Rasmus and much more that what the cards have.  Rowand will get 5/50 bare minimum, we need to be thinking more along the lines of Milton bradley, like Llbros said the other day.  I still like that idea.  I would however be willing to trade pretty much anyone else in the system, but I am a big believer right now in just trying to build.  I would be willing to trade veterans for prospects in a heart beat.  I just think it is time to rebulid.
2/3rd's of the earth is covered by water, the other third is coverd by Jim Edmonds

You can't trade Rasmus but...
You can't trade Rasmus, but I would contend that the Cardinals would definitely have enough to get Johan if they really wanted to (and had no payroll constraints).

You can't tell me that a Rasmus/Duncan/Reyes for Johan offer wouldn't at least be one of the best out there.  Remember, there is a good chance the Twins will lose their center fielder this year and Duncan would be the DH they've been looking for (they've got Liriano coming back and a ton of other good starting pitching).

If you added Rowand (to replace Duncan), it might even be one to give you pause (can you imagine a Santana, Carpenter, Wainright trifecta in the playoffs next year?).

You can't say the Cardinals don't have the pieces to make a Santana deal work (though I don't see a scenerio that would allow us to stay within our budget constraints).  Hell, you wouldn't even have to give up Rasmus if Wainright were involved (which I don't advocate).

I know this season is doom and gloom, but we actually have a few nice young players to build around.  Our problem isn't our young players, it's that our holes for 2008 are extremely hard to fill (league average shortstop, league average lead off hitter, #1 or #2 starter, healthy and productive CF and 3B, league average 4th and 5th lineup position production), and it will take some creativity and luck to do it without screwing our budget (good luck new GM).

Shoot if...
The Cards really wanted Johan Santana, and I mean wanted him like a thristy dude in the middle of the Sahara wants a bottle of Aquafina, they could just offer up Pujols and Wainwright.  I'm reasonbly sure that the Twins would be willing to find a rotation spot for Waino and put Morneau in the DH role!!!

Of course, if in my little hypothetical dream world this were to happen, I would refer to Bill Simmons's rules on when you could officially divorce your team and I would do so...Probably adopting the Cleveland Indians as my new team b/c Pedro Cerrano was always one of my favorite players.  Boy that kid could hit a fastball...

Rowand isn't a bad idea
I know we have Rasmus waiting in the wings, but he is still a year away.  What if he has a poor year in Memphis next year?  Is he still automatically our CF in 2009?  I don't necessarily think so.  We would need a CF then.  If Rowand is here, then (as previously written here) you can trade Duncan plus others for a solid starter.  Rowand, Ankiel, and Rasmus in the years to come would be a pretty nice outfield.

I "heart" Rowand
but where this team is right now (mediocre), I don't think spending the $$ to get him is a wise deployment of resources.  Reed, I would say Rasmus would have to bat sub-.200 for him not be our CF in 2009.

Rowand is a good player, but he's going to cost
a boatload of money, and I don't see him as a player that's good for the life of a long contract.  He plays hard, crashing into walls, eating dirt, getting hit by pitches, sliding hard and recklessly.  That type of player is fun and exciting and ends up on the DL a lot.  See Rolen, see Edmonds, see Freel.  A long term deal with him will give them an excuse to free up Rasmus for a trade.  I don't want to see that happen-I really want to see this kid in St. Louis....

If Tony is back
I can see us making a run for Rowand. Tony really likes him, he picked him for the All-Star team this year, and was saying all kind of good things about him as well.

If Tony has a say I bet we will be in the running.

Rowand
Isn't his contract demand for 6 years and $84MM? If he gets anywhere near that, then the Cards should hang up the phone. I like Rowand, but he is coming off a career year in an extreme pitcher's park and is an injury waiting to happen. Rasmus will likely out-perform him by 2010. I just think this team has bigger priorities than this. (like a good fielding shortstop and a top-notch starter.)

The talk coming out of the organization about Rowand and trying Ankiel in center does make me wonder about whether they are considering a trade involving Rasmus. If so, I hope it would be Santana and not Willis. As Gary Coleman used to say "what you talkin' 'bout, Willis?"

How about handin' me another helpin' of those mashed taters...thank you very much!

No
But I would do something like that...if I was smart enough to think of it at the beginning.
