Best Beer in St.Louis?

I know this isn't completely baseball oriented, but some might say it is...

What beer do you enjoy most while watching the Cards play?

This does not necessarily mean 'At The Stadium.'  I was just interested in what most Cards fans drink when watching the game, at home or at Busch.

Other than Budweiser, what else does everyone drink?

I like alot of the St. Louis Brewery selection, but that one's the best.

schlafly
Most of what Schlafly produces is pretty good.  They have seasonals all year long and they produce 2-3 different styles every month.  Personal favorites include Saison, Oktoberfest, and Pumpkin Ale as well as the Hefeweizen.  I've also been known to enjoy a Boulevard Wheat, though this comes from Kansas City.  I'm pretty much a fan of trying any style beer from any brewery from any part of any country.  A-B, obviously, has some good stuff too.  I enjoy Michelob, especially the Holiday variety packs as well as Budweiser or Bud Heavy as we call it.  I don't really enjoy the Bud Light or the Michelob Ultra but most of the rest is alright.  Oh, and if you're at the gas station late at night and you're looking for a good 40 oz...you can't go wrong with a King Cobra.

Yuengling
not sure if that is available in the mid-west. It is from the oldest brewery in the US. They are located in PA. I perfer their lager, but they have several types.

Bud Yuengling?
When I was in New Jersey last summer I could have sworn they were selling (And I was drinking) a Yuengling lager that was made by Budweiser.

by CardinalsfanIraq on Jan 23, 2007 1:19 AM EST up reply actions

Yuengling
Yuengling is a independant brewery in Pottsville, Pa. They opened in 1829 and are still family owned I think.

Yuengling(ying-ling) is the family name and yes they are German. http://www.yuengling.com/

Is there anyway I can send you a case over there in Iraq? I would love to get you one specially if it would arrive in time for the Superbowl. Let me know how to do it.

My son is in the infantry at Fort Campbell and he will be heading over there next summer. He is only 19 so he won't be needing any.

Unfortunately....
They are making it increasingly difficult to have any fun here in the big sandbox. You'd think there was a war going on or something.

As a Raytheon Contractor, I again fall under the UCMJ (great I'm still in the Marines)...meaning, I can't drink, have...um...female company, or really anything else that is fun. So when I'm not working, I hide in my trailer and visit VEB.

Okay, that was a shameless plug. Any beer would be great right now, but I'm writing down all the great ideas everyone else has for when I come home in May. My brother is a Cubs fan (his loss) but I'm taking him to the Angels/Cards game for his birthday in June. I normally drink Bud Select to watch my girlish figure.

Schlafly Pale Ale
No doubt about it. I don't care what I'm watching.

Schlafly's No. 15 is quite good too. As is their Pilsner. Hell all of them are good.

Schlafly Coffee stout
It's virtually indisputable.  I bring back increasing amounts when I come home, and no matter how much I bring, the people I have hover to my house will end up consuming all of it within two weeks.

There are so many to choose from!
Being in Iraq at the moment the mere thought of beer makes my mouth water!

Here is a short list of a few favorites:

Blue Moon
Pilsner Urquell
Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss
St. Pauli Girl

by CardinalsfanIraq on Jan 23, 2007 1:13 AM EST reply actions

Just before
Super Bowl XXXIX, AB sent a bunch of beer over to Iraq for the troops. We all got two beers apiece; we had to sign for them, consume them inside the dining facility, and turn in the bottles before we could leave. But hey, it was still two real beers!

Maybe you guys will get something like that again this year...  :-)

When
We got back on ship after Iraq in May of '03, once we made it to the Med, we had a BBQ and everyone got two Budweisers apeice. Luckily, I knew a few people and was able to barter out a few more beers for some buddies and myself. It only took about three beers to get a buzz at that point in time, but those were some of the finest beers I've ever had. Total Shawshank moment.
Cheers

by Alxfritz on Jan 23, 2007 6:59 AM EST up reply actions

That would be sweet!
Of course I can have all the near beer I want, but it just doesn't cut it. Although the St. Pauli Girl near beer is pretty damn good, but it costs 15 dollars a case. $15 for a case of beer that won't even get you buzzed! CRAZY! I can't wait until R&R in July so I can have a nice cold Bud Heavy at Busch III!

by CardinalsfanIraq on Jan 23, 2007 7:28 AM EST up reply actions

Blue Moons in the Summer
Fat Tires and/or Sam Adams Octoberfest for the playoffs. And an icy cold Budweiser whenever Shannon gets me in the mood for one.

Also - I'd be remiss not to mention this in a beer thread, but New Belgium's "2-Below" winter ale is one of the tastiest beers I have ever, ever had. Highly reccomended.

Cheers

You can't go wrong
with a good Sam Adams Boston Lager.

I'm pretty partial to Lowenbrau, but I haven't been able to find any here deep in the heart of Texas (even in a German restaurant that had Lowenbrau banners prominently displayed). Warsteiner is a good German beer, especially the Dunkel.

Got some Rolling Rock in my fridge right now, straight from the glass lined tanks of Old Latrobe...I think I'm gonna go have one...

Sam Adams
Right before Christmas, I was enjoying some beers with my dad and had a couple of Sam Adams Winter Lager. I also enjoy Goose Island even if it is a Chicago brewery. I can't hate on all of downtown Chi-town. They do have a few bars designated as Cardinals sovereign territory.

Lowenbrau
a buddy of mine loves that stuff, but he has only found a single place here in west central IL that sells it. He heard that are going to stop importing it but you can get it online somewhere but one has to pay the import tariffs on it.

by elirock83 on Jan 23, 2007 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

That is terrible news...
and hopefully premature. I think Lowenbrau was one of the most popular imported beers in the country in the late 70's...

One I forgot to mention earlier; Dundee's Honey Brown Lager. Great stuff...

Can anyone verify whether the story
about the beer being named after the stadium is true?

I heard somewhere, ages ago, that August Busch tried to name the stadium "Budweiser Stadium," but was informed that MLB would not allow him to name a stadium after a beer.  He then named the stadium after himself, and a few months later, debuted Busch beer.

I think it's a funny story, but I have no idea whether it's actually true or not.

by Valatan on Jan 23, 2007 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

Almost true
He did want to name the stadium Budweiser Stadium and MLB wouldn't allow it so he named it Busch Stadium to hide under the cloak that he was naming it after himself. There was a Busch Beer, however, and it was much more popular back then.  Busch was known as Busch Bavarian originally before the Bavarian was dropped.  So August just named it after a different beer so MLB couldn't do anything about it.

Great January Topic
What better way to make the off-season go by faster....get drunk. My first deployment we got one beer and one shot. Of course some Marines were smarter than others and bartered with some of the non-drinkers (all three of them).

As a relatively-new beer drinker, I'm partial to the darker brews. I can always enjoy a Guinness (cold), any A-B product, and I'll always get talked into trying a new beer once. As a college student in Milwaukee, I always had to smell the miller up there, so that turned me off to beer for awhile.

Now I have a lot of ground to make up...

Since I live in the San Francisco area
and not St. Louis anymore, I prefer a nice Anchor Steam.  No better local beer than that.  I prefer it to Sierra Nevada or just about anything else.

there is no better domestically produced beer, although colorado's own fat tire (out of the new belgium brewing company) runs a close second.

But when I watch a Cards game
I only drink St. Louis macro-brews.  Bud, Bud Light and any beer in the Michelob family.

Macro-Brews
That's funny. Made me laugh. Anyway you can't go wrong with one of those. It really depends on the mood you in. Here are some types of beers. Heavy drinking(HD's),responsible alcohol consumption(RAC's), and Pompous Jerks(PJ's)

HD's
Natural
Beast
Busch
High-Life
Keystone

These are also known as "frat" beers or "PWT" beers since really your forgoing taste and just getting enough "bang for your buck."

RAC's
Guiness
Beamish
McEwan's Scotch Ale
Smirnoff Ice

It's not like you want to RAC these, it's just you can only drink one or two, then you hit the HD's. (Well I do anyway) There's a reason you can only get these in a 6-pack.

PJ's
Heineken
Grolsh

You know "those people" who seem to think they know something about art seem to generally drink these. Like they figured out that if they drink something that tastes "interesting" that they all of a sudden are "interesting." (It's probably true if you think these taste like I do.)

BTW I drink Busch at Busch Stadium, Budweiser anywhere else.

Another very good, but hard to find beer:
Hinano.  I had some on my honeymoon in Tahiti some years back.  It's locally brewed in Tahiti and I really liked it.  Plus, the more I drank, the less mosquitos bothered me.  Can't find it here, except one bar on Washington on the Venice Beach/Marina Del Rey border.  The bar is named the Hinano Cafe.

goose island

goose island is a chicago-based brewery; the oatmeal stout and the "black toad" porter are excellent.  They cause amazingly awful beer farts though...

My Favorites
During the summer, I stick with the lighter ales, mostly Schlafly.  Come the latter half of September, then straight on through October, my friends and I mostly consume massive quantities of Pumpkin Ale from the O'Fallon brewery.  I've tried the Pumpkins from the other places, Schlafly included.  All are good, but the O'Fallon one is sublime.  Oh. My. God.

If you're out, and you love beer, in downtown St. Louis, near Lafayette Square, is the Square One Brewery.  They have a great restaurant, and the beer selection is amazing.  You should really try it.

Goose Island is good also, but when I'm watching the Cards, I just can't bring myself to allow even a small piece of Chicago near me.  I had an ex-girlfriend who was from Chi town, big Cubs fan, and I wouldn't watch games with her.  I don't know why the relationship didn't work out.

Ladies and Gents, thanks for all the beer talk.  Just wanted to make the offseason move a bit faster.

Maybe I should post this on the Cubs board under the title:  "What beer do you drink when Jason Marquis pitches?"
