cormier               pettitte
4-5, 5.00        14-13, 4.30

As Shannon would say the worm has turned, just go ask Slim Pickins and his homeboy Scott Spiezio. We're all gonna be doing some Tomahawk choppin' tonight. It turns out Pettitte will now be pitching on short rest. Go Bravos!

Worm-turning
Hunter S. Thompson was fond of the phrase too. I Googled it and got this:

The Worm Has Turned
by
Nancy Sherer

When Shakespeare used that simple phrase, "The worm has turned," he knew his audience would understand its meaning and origin. A widely used expression even today, it indicates a reversal of fortune, but few who use it know why.

"Worm" is a common term for 'dragon.' In fairy tale terms, the flying dragon spewing fire would ravage fields and villages. To be in the dragon's path resulted in inescapable destruction. What a relief if it changed directions.

The phrase persists through time and changing cultures because it describes a more ancient and universal force: the annual cycle of the sun. As time cycles through the seasons, the Dragon circles through the Zodiac. After summer solstice, when long summer days dry the earth, the Dragon ravages the land bringing drought and pestilence. As the seasons change, the worm turns.

nicknames
Im not for the nickname of the stros but I really don't like them..They Boo albert, and their owner the last two years has irked me ...last year he said they were gonna cath the cards in the central cause they wernt that good or something...maybe trying to ralley his guys but still...

and if tis true that he called to whine to selig ick...plus 90% of stros fans are fair weather not die hards...but they act like they know what they are talking about.

by punchinjudy on Sep 30, 2006 5:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would almost never boo a player-
especially a good one.  But I guess fans are free to be as classless as they'd like.

As far as fair-weather fans, I have nothing against them.  People derive enjoyment from their interests in all kinds of ways.  Baseball can't be that important to everyone who follows it.  However I agree, it irks me when casual students (i.e. fans) of anything try to come off as experts.

Is it just me...
...or are formal Cards in the middle of all the "Other" games.

Morris pitching big to beat the Reds.

Edgar hitting the HR yesterday

and now an oldie

Cormier pitching to help us into the playoffs.

On a side note it is good to see Cormier still pitching after all these years. I wouldn't have guessed that 10 years ago.

by Harknights on Sep 30, 2006 6:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Different Cormier
This guy is only 26 and he's a righty.  The Cormier you're thinking of is working out of the Phillies pen these days.

As to "formal" Cards helping out, I, quite frankly, don't care how they're dressed if they help out the Cards.

Whoops
Figures, since I took a jab at your typo... but Rheal Cormier, the former Card, is pitching out of the Reds' pen, these days, not the Phillies'.

Dodgers/Padres tie question
I'm hoping this is a simple one: if the Dodgers and Padres tie for both the NL West and the wild card, then the division winner is decided by head-to-head numbers, correct?  And how does that outcome affect the Cards' (knock on wood) NLDS match-up?  I.e., who are we likeliest to face in the NLDS?  Thanks, all, for this and all your comments.

by jfs on Sep 30, 2006 6:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, there are not (extra-game) playoffs
for playoff seedings.  We will face whoever is the NL West Champion.
The '06 Cards- The New '64 Phillies?

by Zubin on Sep 30, 2006 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

More over,
If LA and SD tie, SD is the NL West Champ becuase they have a better head-to-head record.  That means the Cards play SD (rematch of '05), and NY plays LA (kinda a rematch of '88).

If LA wins outright, the Cards will play them (ala '85 and '04) and NY plays SD.

In anycase, NY and the NL west champs would get home-feild advantage.

Carp needs the extra days rest, he'll have to go twice in 5 days.

While I wholeheartedly do not want Carp to pitch tomorrow, we cannot afford to assume Houston will lose tomorrow (even if they are down by 5 in the 8th - look what they just did!).  With what's happened in the last 2 weeks, we cannot assume anything.

Carp has to go tomorrow if the Braves don't pull it out here.

Sunday starter
I vote for Narveson.  Assume that the regular starting lineup can handle the young guy the Brewer are starting (hopefully we'll do better than last time).  They could go the 'watch Atl/Hou' route.  Plan on Carp going and change at the last minute if it looks like the Braves are going to win.

Either way, try your utmost to rest Carp, Pujols, etc., etc. tomorrow if at all possible.

by ArkansasTravs on Sep 30, 2006 10:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Damn, that would have been a nice present,
resting Carp. From a quick glance, looks like opinion is pretty evenly split here on whether to start him tomorrow. FWIW, I'm for starting him. I can see some merit in the argument that we only need to win one of (potentially) three games, but seems like top priority now should be just getting to the postseason, not lining up the rotation. The way this team has been playing, we can't make any assumptions about what we can do over three games, and even with trouble the past two starts Carp clearly gives us the best chance tomorrow.

by BTown Birds fan on Sep 30, 2006 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That's right
If the Cards were on their way to the postseason, this would be no problem, but nothing is a given, especially with that Villanueva guy throwing against them tomorrow. They need Carpenter, and they need him to stop dicking around and being Carpenter again.

by ryanisforever on Sep 30, 2006 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please don't criticize Carpenter
for being tired.  If I remember right, he pitched a couple of complete games in the weeks before he had these last two bad starts.  The guy's got a right to be tired & he's done a good job of fighting to keep us in those games where he isn't at his best.

First Playoff Game

by stlcardi70 on Sep 30, 2006 10:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And what would be the rotation options
if Carp goes tomorrow? Working on the assumption that Marquis is done (I could see him doing some relief work under extreme circumstances, but giving him another start would be unforgivable; have a bullpen game, start Sosa, sign Jose Canseco, anything else...), Reyes would be the obvious choice. From some of Tony's comments lately it seems like he's getting a lot more comfortable with him, and I can't see Reyes pulling an Ankiel out there - he seems to in control. Too soon for Weaver?

I said to go w/ Carp
but I'm starting to come around.  We've got 2 chances to win 1, both at home.  And if Carp is forced to go Monday, it won't make a difference w/ him in the playoffs.  Regardless of whether he goes Sunday or Monday, he won't be able to go again until Game 3 unless LaRussa pitches him tomorrow and then in Game 2 on 3 days rest.  He won't do that so it shouldn't make a difference.

To me this speaks to the level of condfidence Tony has in the starting rotation.  If Tony felt at all good about his rotation, he'd go w/ Carp tomorrow.  He knows that, in order to compete in the playoffs, Carp must pitch twice, which means he goes in Game 1.  If Carp goes tomorrow, it's Marquis, or Reyes, or Weaver on short rest in Game 1 -- no great options.  It's probably worth the gamble.

No I am not..... he said something like if he could get 4 from Oswalt, then 2-3 from Clemens then he would hand the rest of the game to the bullpen.... also stated the only pitcher that was not available would be Pettite.......the man is nuts..... talk about disrespecting the rest of your staff....

Carpenter Scenarios
Our first playoff game would be Wednesday......2nd would be Thursday and 3rd is Saturday......4th is Sunday and 5th would be Monday....

If Carp pitches tomorrow he could pitch game 2 on three days rest, then game 5 also on three days rest......

If Carp pitches Monday then he would go on Saturday with full rest but it would be his only start in the NLDS

If we wait and pitch him Tuesday if need be..... He would be available Sunday, again, his only start in the NLDS.... Saturday possibly if we needed him but on three days rest.....

Again, NONE of this means anything if we dont win one of the next three games.... but just being optimistic.....I honestly believe it doesn't matter what we do tomorrow, I have all faith in the world in Smoltzy's last start of the year at home......

I say go ahead and throw Carpenter tomorrow.... He is our Cy Young aways winner for Heaven's Sake..... we should trust him against anyone..... if we need someone.... let Thompson go on Monday..... We already know Bonds and Alou arent playing on Monday if it got that far.....

Also.... then we have Weaver and Soup on Tuesday.... Soup on two days rest..... but I trust his arm bouncing back more than anyone... except maybe that bad man we would rather not talk about.....

Yeah, but where is the 'Ace in the Hole'?
If Carp loses tomorrow thanks maybe to some late bullpen blunders or some such (maybe we only score 1 run), we've used our best pitcher in only the SECOND most important game of the season (maybe some would say the third).  The most important games are Monday against SF or Tuesday against Houston.

by Hardcore Legend on Oct 1, 2006 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whats
Whats the point of making the Playoffs if you dont have a real chance of winning?

Carpenter pitching twice is are best legitmate chance of winning the series. I am not sure what you guys want but I still want a World Series. It is not realistic but crazier stuff has happened.

Carpenter is our best chance. We will be playing against in a short series with him going twice. Anything is possible.

in a nutshell
Lots of confusion in the thread, so here it is in a nutshell:

If Cards win OR Houston loses Sunday, we win Central.  If StL loses and Hou wins Sun, StL plays SF at StL 2:10 on Monday.  Win and we are Central Champs.  Lose, and we play a one-game playoff with Houston on Tuesday, winner takes the Central.

Central winner, ie, the Cards!!, plays the winner of the West.  If EITHER SD wins or LA loses Sunday, SD wins the West and we open in SD on Tues (Wed if we have to stomp Houston in a playoff).  If LA wins tomorrow AND SD loses, LA will sh*t their pants because we open their on Tuesday (or Wed, see above) where we have NOT lost and WILL NOT LOSE in 2006.

So come on LA!  Bring it on!  You are TOAST!!!

ps;  Clemens and Petite "juiced" and Pedro out for the playoffs.  I think things are breaking the Redbirds' way!!!

no way
TLR uses Carp Sun, or Mon.  Doesn't matter who goes Thompsons, Reyes, Narvie, Sosa, or all of the above.

They are floating an idea on Bernie's thread to start the bullpen for 3 or 4, wait and see how Stros do, if its tight or Stros ahead then bring in Carp.  THE dumbest idea ever.  So is starting Carp and pulling him if Atl jumps on Houston.

If Carp warms up, he's done until Game 3 at the earliest, and only pitches once in LDS.  Doesn't matter how long he goes.

No way we lose three in a row.  (Can't believe I just said that!). Ice Carp for Game 1.  Let Pujols pitch on Sunday, God knows he can do everything else.  He'll have to go Southpaw, of corse, can risk an injury to the right side.  Shouldn't slow him up any.
