Why Izzy is Horrible - Closer Rank

Here how Izzy stacks up against the other closers in the league out of 30.

IP: 50.2 - 16/30
ERA: 3.52  19/30 (lower is #1)
SV %: 77%  23/30
K/BB: 1.44 27/30
K/9: 8.27  17/30
WHIP: 1.43 24/30
BA: .214   14/30

This guy makes me just sick. I am going to go look at Loopers numbers cause Izzy is untrustable now.

UGH...
We have a team that hasn't won in a quarter of a century BECAUSE of the complacency we show.  Steinbrenner HAS to get good players or the fans will freaking riot.  If we get fed up, boo, or stop going, ownership will HAVE to bring in the big guys.    If we have anymore years like this, Albert won't re-sign.  He's frustrated, i just watched his interview.  We need the big guys, we need a tight clubhouse (ala ChiSOX last year, BoSOX the year before)...

Make a F-ING move Walt, have some freaking balls!

"You're giving me the 'it's not you it's me' routine!?"

You forgot salary
I bet he ranks in the top ten in that category... which is where most of the frustration is coming from. Performance-wise, he's middle of the pack, better than Dave Veres was for us, better than a true headcase like Danny Graves or Armando Benitez. But we're locked into this mediocrity for another year, and his price tag makes him virtually untradeable, and just as unlikely to be moved to a setup role. And, even with 9 blown saves, he hasn't been horrible enough to be DFA'd.

Lb is right - if you throw him under the bus with all the other disappointments from this season, he's just one of a couple dozen speedbumps.

More Fun Facts
This dramatic loss was just the latest setback for Isringhausen. To wit:
  • He has blown nearly a quarter of his save opportunities this season, nine of 39.
  • In his last five relief appearances, he lost three games and blew save opportunities in two of them.
  • In his last six save opportunities with one-run leads, he failed in four of them.
  • In 53 relief appearances this season, he has walked batters in 25 of them. He has allowed hits in 29 of them. He has gotten through just 15 of those appearances without allowing a hit or bases on balls.
  • Of his 30 saves, two-thirds of them came with leads or two or more runs. And more than one-third of them came with three or more runs

That's IT!
...I've been trying to put a pulse on the one thing about Izzy that bothers me the most, and finally, someone has put it into print:

"In his last six save opportunities with one-run leads, he failed in four of them."

A closer is supposed to be someone you give the ball with trust in one-run situations, and not once in the last two months have I watched Izzy take that ball in said situations and felt comfortable that the game was in good hands.

IF we make the playoffs and we end up with a one-run lead in the top of the 9th, are we still going to blindly hand the ball to Izzy and grit our teeth through another walk and another base hit, if not another home run?

I like the guy and all, but I hate watching him try to close a baseball game.
