Possibility of Craig Counsell playing for the Cards
If Ecks injury is more serious that previous than thought before what is the likelly hood that Craig comes to the way of the Cards. My guess is pretty good.
Counsell may rejoin club on Monday
Melvin not saying how playing time at shortstop will be split with Drew

SAN DIEGO - Craig Counsell is scheduled to play in one more minor league rehabilitation game today with Class A Lancaster and then likely will be activated from the disabled list on Monday and join the Diamondbacks in San Francisco.
But then what?
Will Counsell immediately reclaim his starting job at shortstop, or will manager Bob Melvin continue to play slick rookie Stephen Drew and slowly work Counsell back into the everyday lineup?
Melvin isn't ready to announce anything, saying, "When he (Counsell) gets here, we'll talk about it."
But when asked how difficult it would be to take Drew - who is hitting .317 through 31 games - out of the lineup, Melvin offered the following:
"Stephen's going to play. Absolutely, Stephen's going to play."
He just wouldn't say how much.
Counsell, who went a combined 2 for 12 in a designated-hitter role for Triple-A Tucson, played shortstop for Lancaster on Saturday. He has been on the disabled list since July 15 with a right rib fracture.
Stats for the Year:
.278/.334/.366/.700 pretty much his career numbers

What's he making?
Counsell
I don't know how wise it would be picking up a guy coming off a major injury who hasn't hit well in his rehab. Just for kicks, I looked up his last serious injury. He broke his thumb in 2003 and missed two months. Before the injury, he'd hit .276/.387/.353 and after the injury went .209/.289/.273.
Totally different type of injuries, broken rib vs. thumb, so draw any conclusions in pencil. (To mix metaphors.)
In other news, this Yankees @ Red Sox game is fairly entertaining. Joe Morgan seems to be actively antagonizing sabermatricians at this point. A bit earlier, he was blathering on about how it's far better to hit the ball than it is to draw a walk when Robinson Cano hit the ball into a double play.
Eckstein
As you can see pretty horrible especially for a lead off guy.

Counsell...
woo hoo...
anyway.
Counsell is turning 36 tommorow...do we really want or need another guy that old?
I know he's probably only a rental player but still...the D'backs can keep him...at least in my opinion
I like Counsell ...
Hey, wasn't Counsell the guy who hit the HR against the Cards in the 2001 playoffs?
i'd take him...
But something we do have

Eckstein is out week or more
Head trainer Barry Weinberg said Sunday morning that even the most optimistic scenario projects Eckstein will miss at least the next seven to 10 days with a strained left oblique muscle suffered in Friday's 11-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. Eckstein returned to St. Louis after Sunday's 5-3 win and will be examined today by team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta.
Weinberg said he would be "thrilled" if Eckstein returned within a week, characterizing an absence of seven to days as a "best-case scenario."
Eckstein was injured while scoring from second base on Albert Pujols' third-inning single. Cubs catcher Michael Barrett pinned Eckstein's leg, then rolled into the shortstop's side while scrambling for a loose ball. Eckstein at first worried that he had suffered a broken leg. It wasn't until he made a warmup throw that he discovered the oblique strain.
The Cardinals plan to be especially cautious with the last position player to miss a start this season. Barring an unexpectedly optimistic prognosis from Paletta, the club is believed to be leaning toward putting Eckstein on the disabled list retroactive to Aug. 17.
"I worry about David rushing back, just because of the type of player and personality more than anything," Weinberg said. "You have to factor that in your decision. He's so anxious to play."
The projection means Eckstein may be out until rosters can expand Sept. 1. The Cardinals have discussed pursuing infielder Jose Vizcaino, whom the San Francisco Giants recently designated for assignment, or promoting shortstop John Nelson from Triple-A Memphis. Nelson is not on the 40-man roster but is considered by some a capable short-term answer.
It is more likely, however, that the club will promote outfielder John Rodriguez from Triple-A Memphis and try to get by with the infielders on hand.
Aaron Miles made his second consecutive start at shortstop Sunday. Before Sunday's game, Scott Spiezio took ground balls at the position, and manager Tony La Russa mentioned second baseman Ronnie Belliard as another option there.
Without Eckstein, the infield situation is acute enough for La Russa to say he could use outfielder So Taguchi at second base in a pinch. Taguchi played second in college before moving to center field as a professional.
Eckstein rode a stationary bike in the visitors' clubhouse Sunday and reported slightly less discomfort. After finding it difficult to sleep Friday night, Eckstein said he had fewer problems Saturday.
"I've talked to some guys who've had it, and I know it's something I have to be careful with," Eckstein said. "If I come back too soon and it comes back, we're talking three to six weeks. Then you're into late September or into October."
A similar injury to the right side sent first baseman Albert Pujols to the disabled list earlier this season. Catcher Gary Bennett avoided the DL but was severely limited for almost three weeks.

Counsell is a very good defensive infielder,
I hate this idea...
74G 306AB .278 Avg .334OBP .366 SLG .700 OPS
Miles:
100G 299AB .261 Avg .330 OBP .348 SLG .678 OPS
Eckstein:
115G 477AB .289 Avg .349 OBP .329 SLG .678 OPS
Tagucci:
107G 274AB .270 Avg .336 OBP .354 SLG .690 OPS
These guys are all, essentially interchangable parts in a line up. Why on earth would you want Counsell- (especially as some have suggested for J-Rod and his .850 OPS?) Sure Counsell is an intermitant and incrimental improvement at short defensively, but how much are you willing to pay for that?
It seems to me that the problem with the Cards' roster is that they are overpaying for interchangable parts that make incremental or no difference. I think picking up Counsell just compounds this.
What part to hate the most
By the way, if Taguchi ever gets significant time at second the rest of the way you might as well forfiet the rest of your games. And Miles is not someone you should rely on in the long term to be a stop gap at SS. He already has been over exposed.

Supposed to be. What part do you hate the most?

Not to mention that
Now I really dont think it will happen, I do think it is an upgrade over what we have available.
