it was 8-2 when i turned off the tv to take a walk; 8-7 when i returned; and now 12-7 and counting . . . . . .

I did
the EXACT same thing.  Well not the walking part.  But checked the score online to see how bad it was after turning it off earlier.  Then flipped it back on to see Looper once again blowing up.

I, too, did the exact same thing
(Talking to girlfriend, who wanted to take a walk)

ME: Can I check the score before we go? If it's close i want to stay and watch for a little bit."

HER: Sure, whatever.

(turns on tv. score is 8-2. turns off tv.)

ME: Nevermind.

Lesson? Don't go on walks.

Right now...
...he's just not very good.  I'm don't want to catch heat for it, but he's 7 for 32 (.218) with 4 RBIs, 1 HR and 4Ks.

He's raising up when he swings at the ball, not staying down and powering through it.  It's creating big holes in his swing.

Might as well bat him lead-off since no one is getting on in front of him. Bat him lead off so we might not get a 1-2-3 first inning for a change.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

42 runs in the 6 games, and you want to talk about albert not getting it done?

by lboros on Aug 3, 2006 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Of course, I see it now....
...Albert's poor hitting is directly related to the teams poor pitching.

How could I have been so blind.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

i just don't see the relevance
of your harping on every 30 at-bat sample in which albert fails to meet mvp standards.

by lboros on Aug 3, 2006 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Who is harping?
If it were Jim Edmonds, Yadier Molina or Aaron Miles, you'd have no problem with people posting such lines.

MVP standard or not, Pujols has had 2 multi-hit games in his last 14.  That's simply not good coming from a guy that bats in the prime spot in the lineup.

Pithing is terrible. Doesn't change the fact that while #3 spot went 1 for 5, 4 thru 7 went 7 for 15 tonight with 4 RBIs, 3 2Bs and a homerun.

Why not bat Albert first?  Give him more at-bats to break out of the funk, Eckstein and Belliard aren't getting on base, so bat Eckstein 2nd and give Rolen, Edmonds, Encarnacion and Duncan a chance to drive him in.

Pujols isn't hitting well right now.  Why can't that be said?  No one is talking about running him out of town or throwing him under the bus.  However, he's what makes this team go.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions

What about the previous 5 when we lost by an..
..average under 2 runs per game?

That doesn't have anything to do with the Pujols discussion, but 1 horrid night does not a 6 game losing streak make.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Well...
Tonight obviously weighs heavier on my mind since I actually paid to see this garbage and I didn't see any of the previous five because they all conflicted with Memphis games.

Oh yeah...
forgot to add -- drove 300 miles AND paid to see this crap.

by whopperman on Aug 3, 2006 2:09 AM EDT up reply actions

you're suggesting we move the guy to leadoff
maybe that's not "harping," but it's certainly making way too much out of a 32-at-bat sample.

it's a true fact that albert has had an off week, but it's also a pointless fact --- it's about 10th on the team's list of concerns right now.

your opinion may differ

by lboros on Aug 3, 2006 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Obviously Pujols power outage isn't the highest
concern with this team.  However, he's been able to mask the problems for a good stretch of the season.  Without any relief coming for the rotation in the near future, I guess you could say the team is more reliant on Pujols to score more runs than the pitching can give up :P

Pujols, unfortunately had 5 HRs in his last 91 ABs.  12 XBH in that same span.  That a HR every 18+ ABs and an XBH every 7.5 ABs.  His career averages for those are 1 HR every 14 ABs and 1 XBH every 6.5.

Luckily, Albert has had his best month of his career in the month of August, so look forward to a big rebound.  However, it's been a rough almost 30 days for El Hombre.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions

his line for july
was .361 / .441 / .691. august is two days old.

forgive me for saying so, but i think it's ridiculous to call that a "rough" 30 days.

he's ever-so slightly behind his xbh and hr rates over 91 at-bats, but the gaps are completely insignificant. in those 91 at-bats that have you so concerned, pujols has put up a .314 / .410 / .593 line --- a 1.003 ops.

forgive me again, but i think it's ridiculous to deem that a slump. that's a great batting line, even for a player who carried a 1.200 ops for half a season.

we got so accustomed to having albert produce in every key situation during the first half that it created some unrealistic expectations. for this one week, he has not been superman; for this one week, he has not been great enough to save the team from its own mediocrity.

to you, that means "he's just not very good" right now --- and i'm quoting you directly from this post above. i just don't think the evidence supports that statement

by lboros on Aug 3, 2006 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Since June 4th....
....
24 Games
91 ABs
28 H
15 R
7 2B
5 HR
1 3B
14 RBI
6 K
13 BB
1 HBP

.307/.400/.571
.971 OPS

Still good stuff, but not El Hombre-ish.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I think we have bigger complaints
Than someone only posting a 971 OPS.

Like the staff's 971 ERA lately.  Or the 971 OPS of C and 2B combined.

by whopperman on Aug 3, 2006 3:05 AM EDT up reply actions

the basic argument here is
that albert is doing more to help the cardinals win than any other player on the team, and virtually any other player in baseball . . . . . but he's made some outs when the cards were trying to dig out of another 5-run hole, and the cards lost those games. if he'd gotten hits in those situations, the cards might have won.

ergo he needs to do better.

by lboros on Aug 3, 2006 3:12 AM EDT up reply actions

The basic arguement here is
that seemingly no one on this team is playing at or better than their career averages right now.

When your team leaders (Pujols and Rolen) are doing that, motivating the rest of the team becomes increasingly difficult.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 3, 2006 4:06 AM EDT up reply actions

but 6 game samples
mean nothing. taking the season as a whole:

pujols is headed for career highs in slugging, homers, rbi, walks, and ops --- this despite missing 15 games on the dl

rolen is 15-20 points above his career avgs in avg, obp, and slg

encarnacion is headed for a career high in slugging and close to his career peaks in avg, hr, rbi, and ops

eckstein is beating his career avgs for avg and obp, and is slugging right at his career avg

rodriguez, duncan, and zpiezio are all overachieving.

luna beat his career avgs in everything

you're being unrealistic to expect these guys to maintain career-best production week in and week out. if albert slides back to the mean for a week or a month, that is normal. it's hardly a problem, as you're interpreting it.

the problems with the team are a) the pitching stinks, which is 90 pct of the problem, and b) the supporting cast's level of talent is too low. juan encarnacion may be beating his own standards, but his standards are so low that he can beat them and still not be a very good player. ditto aaron aaron miles -- he's playing right to his career avgs, but he's still a terrible player. the fault for this lies with the front office / ownership; not every scrap-bin player will turn in an abe nunez or tony womack type year. not every bad ballplayer will magically have a good season when they put on a cardinal uniform.

by lboros on Aug 3, 2006 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Ryan Howard
How did he get out of St. Louis? He went to high school and was a star. Went to Springfield and was a star. Who the heck did we draft instead of Ryan? I am sure this has been said before, but whoever let him get out of the STL needs to be dragged threw the streets, shot, and his bloody corpse hung from the ARCH.

Pathetic game tonight. No life in this team whatsoever. Only good thing about tonight was are pathetic play royaly screwed ESPNs schedule. Way to go guys! If you are going to suck on national tv, at least do you best to put the screws to ESPN.

Just saw Tony's post game, at least he seamed as pissed off as the rest of us. He didnt even take one question, blew up, and stormed out. Too bad he didnt drop any F Bombs on live tv. That would have been sweet.

What's it going to take for this team to play up to its potential like they did the past two seasons? It's like, to quote Troy Aikman, They are numb to winning. They have done it for so long and just expect it to always happen. And they just go threw the motions and expect wins to, just happen. And thats not how to play winning baseball. This team should be embarrassed with their level of intenseity.

I am a fan for life. But this is getting harder and harder to defend this teams play. I just dont see it. I dont see the fire they used to have. I dont think they are going to make it to the playoffs. And if they do, its one and done.

This is hard to watch. We come back and get within one run, and then the bullpen blows up. How many beatings can this team take before they get pissed off and start playing like they did for the past two seasons? Are they even capiable of doing that? All we have is questions. No answers. This is very very depressing.

Don't give up. Don't ever give up. After all, GOD is a Cardinal Fan too.

Kidding aside, I think Jeff Weaver may have pitched himself into the unemployment line tonight.

Reyes was in the bullpen this evening because his next start was pushed back a day, to allow Carp to pitch on normal rest.  Not a bad idea... try to keep Reyes' arm fresh for the rest of August and September.

Matheny
In other news, Mike Matheny will be out for the rest of the year b/c of his concussions. Kinda sad. Here's a bit from AP:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Catcher Mike Matheny has made little progress in his recovery from a concussion and will not play again this season for San Francisco.

After another series of tests and appointments with specialists at the University of Pittsburgh last week, Matheny and the Giants' medical staff made the difficult decision that he should spend the rest of 2006 recovering to reduce the risk of further damage to his brain.

"It's real, and I understand that, and I also understand it's out of my hands," said Matheny, who made the announcement Wednesday after the Giants' 8-6 victory over the Washington Nationals. "I'm at peace with that. ... It's such a weird phenomenon: I look at myself right now and I look as normal as I ever have."

The 35-year-old Matheny, who is on the 60-day disabled list, has been sidelined since May 31 and is still experiencing "fogginess," memory loss, dizzy spells and headaches. He has
walked into a room, for example, and not  remembered why he did.

A four-time Gold Glove winner -- including last season in his first year with the Giants -- Matheny was hit in the head several times by foul balls during a three-game series at Florida -- the last one square on his chin.

by Dirk Dorkelson on Aug 3, 2006 1:23 AM EDT reply actions

That's a damn shame...
post-concussion syndrome can be a serious condition, affecting "quality of life" even more than the ability to play baseball.  Matheny's been a class act his whole career, but I'm afraid his career may be over.

First inning leads....
....the Cardinals have scored in the first inning in exactly 1 of their last 15 games.

only 3 games
since the All-Star break.  For a fragile pitching staff, it would help to...

oh, who am I kidding?  They'd just relinquish the lead anyways.

Weaver's Quote
...on the official website this morning is:

"That's the way it's going right now," Weaver said. "At times, I feel like I make good pitches and they still hit it out. It's just one of those funks pitchers go through, just like hitters. Sometimes it just takes a pitch right down the middle that's popped up to get you out of the situation. There's really nothing I can put a finger on, other than just working too hard to get guys out."

Seems like he's working on getting that popup a bit too often to me.

Also, Pu's gotta be playing hurt...seen him hit uncharacteristically badly lately, with rally-ending popups and GIDP's.  Here's hoping whatever ails him straightens out soon.
