Wilson Betemit

So I just read on MLBTradeRumors that Wilson Betemit is being shopped by the Braves.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/07/braves_shopping.html

I know that those looking for Pitching Depth or a solid Left Fielder will quickly void this option. But after seeing the Braves in our recent series, I started to like this kid. He would solve our Aaron Miles problem at 2nd (Although Miles did do alright today it seems)and looks much better than Luna, in my opinion. If Walt is shopping for options, like usual, this may not be really big but would benefit the team for the next few years during the time hes expected to reach his full potential. Unfortunately, the Braves are looking for Bullpen help, which I don't believe we have a lot of this year. Thoughts anyone?

I don't know much about him
but I wouldn't mind seeing it if TLR would play him over Miles. Considering that we have a decent 2B in Luna, I think it would make more sense to target a weaker position, but that doesn't matter if TLR won't use Luna.

Miles has had some big hits recently, but his average for June and July is only .228 in 127 at-bats and I'd say that's pretty anemic for an extended period of time.

If you can get him for some relief arms
I say go for it...

Hancock, Thompson, Falkenborg, Kinney, Cavazos(sp?) all seem to be middle relievers who are less than critical to the bullpen.  Throw a few Atlanta's way w/ a prospect...maybe we can snag him and get rid of Miles.

I think that our bullpen could stand to lose any 2 of those guys (although I'd hate to see Hancock go as I feel like he's been the best) and I'm thinking more and more that Reyes will get bumped to the bullpen when Mulder returns (for better or worse.)

Hancock...
is VERY critical to our bullpen. He has been our best reliever outside of Wainwright.
That's beer, that's Budweiser.

true but he's also done a lot of
mop up type roles and while he's good I still feel like he's replaceable.

How about
Luna and Thompson for him?

That was gonna be my suggestion
But I didnt wanna sway opinions too much. I feel that we have enough young guns with the Big League club, Reyes & Wainright, and plenty up and coming prospects that we could part with Thompson. Luna for him would be good. Considering that I think Betemit has better upside. And Betemit is still gonna be cheap.

I hate to give up Luna though
because then the only person who could spell Eckstein would be Betemit...who would presumably be playing at 2nd everyday.

I guess Betemit would fit in the 6th/7th spot of the order...doesn't seem like he's "dangerous" enough for Tony for the 2-hole.

sure
put me down for Betemit. I wonder what the asking price is. Looking at Luna's PECOTA card verses Betemit, Betemit projects much better.

all for this
The thing about the trade deadline it usually the sellers are thinking to trade for furture performance.  Just because the Cardinals are buyers in this market doesn't mean we shouldn't take a chance of locking the revoloving door that we have had at second base with a good loking young player.
