Trade Talk, Corner Outfield Platoons, & Play-Offs

I went to Fangraphs to compare some of the most recent trade prospects rumored as interest to Cardinals including Dellucci, Burrell, and Conine.  I also compared them to our current lot of platoon players splitting time in Left.  Trying to estimate if an upgrade might result is not at all obvious.

It is clear that Dellucci epitomizes platoon as it looks like he couldn't hit a lefty with a Tennis Raquet with a K% off the charts. But his BABIP suggests that even his new found prowess off the right-handers should not be counted on as indicative of future performance.  Burrell strikes out too much to my liking, and Conine may just be too old and tired.

If star full time players mentioned like Abreu and Soriano are just untouchable by cost of contract or trade demands, then it appears we are destined to continue the platoon.  Looking at the L/R Split graphs for pitchers it is very convincing that using match-ups is an effective way to put statistics to one's advantage.  Clearly TLR & Dunc assemble and use a Bullpen on this basis, and this is often done in concert with the double-switch for those fielding positions that are platooned, in our case LF and to a lesser extent 2B & RF.  I happen to like the NL, and the game strategy that goes with the double-switch, and if records were kept I'd bet that TLR leads in its use by a very wide margin.

However, it's one thing to platoon starting players by their L/R splits, and another to have them handicapped as pinch hitters and subs accordingly.  This is where the platoon game breaks down, and issues that may be covered by a 162 game season, become glaring shortcomings in a 7 game series.  Player substitutions that have more to do with differentiating defensive specialists from sluggers, probably plays better that L/R splits.

So here is the question of the day:  Can anyone find the statistics to show through the play-offs or WS alone, if Corner Outfield Platoons perform anywhere close to as well as every day Corner Outfield Players?  And, If there have been any particularly productive playoff platoons, can they be characterized as based upon L/R Splits or Offensive/Defensive substitution?

Or perhaps more simply:  Of the Play-Off bound teams of 2006, which ones are using Corner Outfield Platoons?  And, is this strategy more common to the NL where it may appear to be acceptable during the season, and then leaves us handicapped in the WS?

Platoons
Boston uses a Platoon in RF... Trot Nixon hits righties and someone else usually hits lefties (Wily Mo Pena Gabe Kapler... here are Nixons splits...

Nixon (vs. Righties) 204 AB .338/.432/.480 4 HR 36 RBIs (Vs. Lefties) 69 AB .217/.358/.348 2 HR 8 RBIs

Wily Mo has been hurt and has only 58 total ABs this season... Kapler just came back from Japan and has even fewer ABs... but Nixon doesn't play usually agaisnt LHP... nd it was that way in 2004 when they won the WS

Toronto
also uses a OF plantoon in LF... Reed Johnson hits both Lefties and Righties well but gets most of his playing time against LHP while Frank Catalanotto gets the majority of playing time against RHP (only 12 ABs agaisnt lefties all season... here are their splits...

Catalanotto (vs righties) 199 ABs .327/.431/.508 5 HR 36 RBIs

Johnson (vs. lefties) 103 ABs .350/.455/.417 0 HR 6 RBIs

Toronto might not make the playoffs but they are in the race and are getting great production out of LF as you can see...

Platoons
I think Burrell despite his strike outs would make the best platoon.  He mashes Left-handed pitching and Duncan mashes right handed pitching.  Both strike out a lot, but I think their power makes up for it.  I would be happy with Burrell starting most games, but getting an off day occasionally with a righty starter going.

Juan Enc and Burrell both hit better against lefties while J-Rod and Duncan both hit better against righties (one of them would probably lose a roster spot to Burrell).  A quasi-platoon could be put into effect with J-Rod or Dunc almost always starting against righties with Burrell and Juan Enc getting atlernating days off and Juan Enc and Burrell always starting against lefties.  I think Burrell makes our lineup very powerful.  Also if we added Burrell this So Taguchi could go back to being a wonderful defensive replacement/backup CF.  I think Burrell is the best option for us.

sorry wouldn't really be a platoon
I sort of butched what I wanted to say.  I was saying Burrell and Enc would start normally with each of them getting 1 or maybe 2 (especially for Enc) days off a week against right handers.  Not really a strict platoon.  However, I think Burrell could be one of those players that becomes a lot better if he plays here and if that is the case he would be a starter and possibly a star player.

I want Abreu...
and am willing to include Juancion in the deal!  I know that doesn't address LF, but I'm starting to get a "feel" about Duncan.  He knows pitchers don't want to walk him ahead of El Hombre, and he's being aggressive.  Had a pretty good AB against a lefty on Sunday, too.

Right now, it seems Duncan/Spiezio is our best offensive platoon in left, with So as a late-inning defensive replacement.

<grin> But What Do I Know?

ok any more to the delucci
deal? I have read many things about him, and many include sending Dunc down...What about sending SO down and keeping dunc then adding Delucci?

So
He won't be sent down.  I'm not sure he has options left and if we send him down we have no real backup CF.

Delucci bats left-handed...
If we sent So down and kept Dunc, we would have 4 left-handed batters in the OF (Edmonds, Duncan, Rodriguez, Delucci). Tony likes to mix it up and have a right-handed batter off the bench or to bat against lefties.

Dunc or J-Rod would go down if we pick-up Delucci. J-Rod's hitting has really picked up, so I think Dunc would get sent down.

Platoon Posters
Thanks for the posts.  Although outside of BicMac's remarks, we don't really have much historical perspective of the success of platoons in the playoffs vs. traditional full time corner outfielders.
From this week's excitement to consider getting better starting pitching in trade rather than a bat, it seams that many veb posters would be content to live with the platoon if that happened.
As jdubya pointed out, something has to give to fit Delluci.  But with Dunc still showing great stuff, that trade makes less and less sense.  To that I say "Phew".
I think the platoon works for TLR, and in the context of our pitching staff.  I certainly don't think we should trade top talent to make a marginal improvement of the platoon.  But it would still be reassuring to see other successful championship examples of platoons than just the BoSox.
