Reds make a deal with Washington

8-player deal with the Reds giving up Felipe Lopez, Austin Kearns, and Ryan Wagner for Gary Majewski, Royce Clayton, Bill Bray, Brendan Harris, and Daryl Thompson.

I don't know much about the last three Nats guys, but I really don't understand this deal from the Reds perspective. They're giving up 3 young, decent to good players for some guys that don't seem to be able to really help them much this year. Just the downgrade at SS alone is enough to make me wonder why the Reds agreed to this.

i'm glad...
im not a reds fan.

If my playoff hopeful team traded a 26 Y/O of with pop who has been coveted by many in recent years along with a darn good MI (I have no idea how his glove is) a guy only drafted 2 years ago who was supposed to be the closer of the future for a middle reliever, an aging and always pretty crappy SS (good glove though) and uhhh, 3 OTHER guys for a playoff run...well...

I guess this is why I'm not a GM.  I'm off to search the internet to find out reasons why the Reds believe this is the move that'll put them over the top.

My only theory?  They are on the verge of landing a huge name provided the payroll space is there.

As a Cardinals fan the Reds were always a minor blip on my radar now I'm as aware of them as I am Lithuanian politics.

When I saw the headline
about the Nats acquiring those players from the Reds, I was convinced the Reds had landed Soriano. So needless to say, I was quite pleasantly surprised to find out the actual details once I read the article.

what are the chances
that the cards can now get kearns from the nationals?  He is someone we have liked for a while now or will it be too hard to get him away from bowden?

That would be a stellar acquisition
Kearns can play CF as well or play an above average RF.  Regardless he would slot well into our lineup.

Jim Bowden continues to rob the Reds...
Bowden architected some pretty lousy trades as Reds GM, most notably the dump of Aaron Boone to the Yankees for Brandon Claussen. Now he gets some revenge as the Nationals GM. He may be getting a defensive liability in Lopez, but the guy is one of the best-hitting shortstops in the NL, and Bowden got him AND Kearns for a song.

Without another "shoe," as the Dude puts it, this trade will at best break even for the Reds in the long term. I just don't see trading away a player of that age and potential, and getting so little in return, no matter what you think of his defense.
