Around SBN: Bills must alter strategy to make offense work

Game 70 overflow thread . . . .

if/when the game thread reaches 200 posts. i have to leave now for the airport to pick up my wife daughter and mother-in-law, who are flying in from . . . .

. . . . . chicago?

it's their fault!

my daughter may only be 2, but baseball is baseball: if she's responsible for this in any way, she's grounded for the rest of the summer.

This is terrible. Downright awful and embarrasing. It's like a little league blowout... no wait, worse, because these guys are being paid millions of dollars to be blown out.
Let's try to be optimistic though, we can forget about this one (the Birds tried to do that last night and that didn't exactly work, though)...
  1. Pujols will be back soon.
  2. It's only 2 games, and we have a 5 game lead in the division. We're still on top.
  3. We'll have something to look forward tomorrow in Reyes pitching
  4. America's Got Talent is on NBC... that's atleast a little bit entertaining.

Oh, don't forget...
Timo Perez is a waste of oxygen.
What happened to those 57 straight scoreless frames, Brad?

In da minors
Hawksworth gave up 2 earned runs in 7 innings with 10 KO's and no walks. Amaury Marti went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs, as Palm Beach beat Daytona 10-3.

For State College, left-hander Tyler Norrick (6th round, Festus, MO native, SIU Sr.) pitched 4 middle innings, giving up 1 ER, but striking out 9 and walking none. Mark Hamilton went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs as State College beat Williamsport 5-2.

Bernie M. says
Ponson is being considered for Sunday's start in place of Mulder.

I don't know which is worse.  Would you rather be burned alive or eaten by ants?

Ponson was also running in the outfield for the first time all season according to Bernie.

by BozCardsFanSF on Jun 21, 2006 11:04 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good news
Hopefully that's a sign they're going to work on fixing Mulder. Nice to hear that Ponson's giving some effort also and I'd rather concentrate on getting Mulder fixed (figuratively speaking) than Ponson.

I'm actually thinking
that Mulder might need some time in Memphis to sort all of this out.  Why let him sort out problems with mechanics and stuff at the major league level, where the games count against the record?  He's better than this, and at the minimum, he might need a set of "rehab" starts to sort everything out.

by Valatan on Jun 22, 2006 1:21 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

IF we don't know what's wrong
with his mechanics and his fastball can't get past 88, what is he going to fix in the minors?

by sdrone on Jun 22, 2006 1:28 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

well,
  1. he won't be killing the big club
  2. he'll have more of a chance to improve than he would during a demotion to the bullpen, the most oft-repeated option that I've seen called for here
  3. If his problem is a global "general problem" then the minors are the place to pick apart his game, and have him focus exclusively upon one aspect of pitching at a time, not caring about the runs put up, and build up a well-rounded game again

by Valatan on Jun 22, 2006 1:31 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe, but
he seems to be in a state of denial right now, so how willing is he going to be to do something like that?

by cardsrul on Jun 22, 2006 9:04 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Give Marquis some credit
he gave up 13 runs, pretty crappy, but at least he kept his head in the game and gave us 5 innings and didn't kill the bullpen for a second night in a row. too bad we can't say the same for mulder.

Craig Paquette

stooges at work... SIGH...
Okay, tomorrow is a new day...  And maybe we can pull out a win and not get swept...

And Ozzie Guillen is such a jerk.... (WNBA? Madonna Concert??)

Guillen is something of an enigma
He seems to veer wildly back and forth between class and crass...

I'm left wondering why...
..the pitching coaches son can't pitch.  I mean, can he honestly do worse than 13 runs?  And if so, we can always do a double switch and move him to one of the 7 positions we try playing him in.

Just kidding.  I'm a huge Duncan fan, and I hope he stays up with the big league club when El Hombre comes back.

What to do with Edmonds Out..
With Edmonds apparently out for a bit.. and already needing surgery... we might move Juan to Center and put duncan in right.

Just a theory.. who knows

by TNFan32 on Jun 22, 2006 1:06 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Trust me
You do not want to watch Duncan try to play the outfield every day.

There's a reason he's always played first.

I'd rather put....
Juan right
Gooch center
Dunc left

well I was at the game...
And I hate to say it, but sox fans are the new cubs fans.

I had about 20 Sox fans literally want to fight me, just for wearing an STL jersey.  Believe me, the last thing I could do after that sad game was talk any trash.  Hell, if it was the other way around on the scoreboard, I wouldn't have talked trash, that's not what cardinal baseball is all about.  I was complementary towards the Sox and that wasn't good enough.

Living 10 minutes from Wrigley, as a lifelong Cards fan, I always kind of liked the Sox.  Unfortunately, that changed tonight.

by jschryver138 on Jun 22, 2006 1:34 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Me too,
I had to remind some sox fans of their place in the standings on the way out.

I was there too
And was very disappointed at the quality of fans I encountered.

Sorry To Hear That
I'm a long time Sox fan who was at last night's game and I didn't see any of that.  There were lots of Cardinal fans in the section and, as far as I could see, they were all treated kindly, almost gently, the way you would a stranger who is suffering through a very public embarrassment.  In fact, I had a conversation with one of them about how much more knowledgeable and civil Cards fans are than Cubs fans.  To the extent that anyone hassled you guys for wearing your colors, they were out of line and, on behalf of the vast majority of Sox fans, I apologize.  Feel free to come back anytime.  And please bring your pitching staff.

by Landfill on Jun 22, 2006 10:12 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

LOL
Have to admit, that last line was funny.

I did note the fans gave Edmonds a hand as he left the field.

Is it possible that some of the turds were actually Cubs fans who have jumped ship after last year? :-)

Fair Enough
I'll be back tonight.  What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment.  Hopefully, I'll get a different vibe at "the cell" this evening.

Hopefully Reyes will be able to get some men out as well.

by jschryver138 on Jun 22, 2006 3:55 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Second that
Why can't these people just be happy with what they have rather than "[name] sucks?"  My girlfriend and I actually had to change sections because of the people around us.  If any ballpark needs ushers it's that one (I don't think there were any.)  I like the sauce as much as the next guy, but hearing the beer vendor advise the drunk, pugnacious underage idiots behind us how they can get served did not help matters.  I've been to probably a dozen Cardinal games at Wrigley and have never suffered anywhere near that level of disrespect.

There's a reason that Sox fans have the reputation they do.

boy
that was a great game.
