MLB TradeRumors

According to MLBtraderumors, there is possibility that the Cubs will move maddux. The Cardinals are listed as "interested" in that. Also, the Cardinals are listed as the only fit for Jay Payton. Last, the Cards are listed as a possible fit for Adam Kennedy.

Honestly, I don't see the Maddux thing happening the Cubs would be crazy to deal him with the always frail Prior and Wood DL combo. Jay Payton just doesn't interest me. He isn't a marked upgrade from any of our platooning OF's. Adam Kennedy would definetly be worth a look. A former Cardinal for one.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Maddux
Surely the Cubs won't move him.  From what I've read recently, he wants to stay in Chicago.  There was talk about him going to Milwaukee to be with his brother, but I can't imagine that'll happen either.

I wouldn't want Payton.  Kennedy could be OK, but if Luna keeps this up, he may not be necessary either.

Sean Marshall is doing well
but I don't think he's doing well enough to trade Maddux.  hah.  Right now, Maddux and Zambrano are their only real starting pitchers.

that rumor is
pretty thinly sourced --- "industry sources" provided the information. the rumor was first published at gotham baseball dot com, which is a reputable site but doesn't necessarily have the type of inside access you would need to get a scoop like this. i don't believe the rumor at all

Nope
I don't buy that one either. At least not now--Chi is off to a good start this year, and Maddux is a huge part of that. Maybe later, when they fall out of contention. If Maddux is still pitching well his stock will be way up, so maybe. But he has said many times he wants to stay in Chi anyway.

Kennedy
According to Baseball Musings Probabilistic Model of Range:

http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/cat_probabilistic_model_of_range.php

Kennedy was the 12th best fielder out of 46 2nd basemen last year, roughly on par with Grudk. This model doesn't think much of Spivey's or Miles's fielding last year, interestingly enough. I'd be interested if none of our 2-baggers are producing come June, if Luna is still raking I would just ride him.

Why would StL want a
SEVENTH, or possibly eighth starter?  I don't really see the point in adding Maddux to the roster right now, particularly when all of our trade capital should be directed toward trading for an outfielder.

If you're stockpiling outfielders at AAA
for tradebait, why not stockpile pitchers?  They're more valuable.   Acquiring Maddux makes someone else expendable.

Not that I think there's any chance we'll acquire Maddux.

Jays have depth in OF...

...and have just been killing everybody with the bats.  Their pitching is hurting them though and with Burnett questionable they look to be in the market for a OF for SP swap.  I still think we should try to move one of our SP's that we don't think we will or can sign next year...especially with Wainwright looking primed and ready.

To me, if they are not looking to play JRod and Gall more then we are either waiting on Bigbie to get a shot or Jock is shopping hard for an OF.

Jays
I like that idea, and it sounds pretty feasible to me.  While I'd hate to lose Marquis, I'm guessing he'd be the one the Jays would be most interested in.

well
While Marguis has a good arm i think his most valuable asset is his bat. He just tends to shy away from the game plan to often and it hurts him in the long run.

Kennedy possibly but
no way do I want Payton on this team.  I've disliked him ever since he was on the Mets.  Anybody else remember him diving into a pitch from Dave Veres in Game 5 of the 2000 NLCS and then wanting to fight?

If Luna can keep hitting, he's the answer at second base.  He's got far more upside than Miles.

So I guess that means it's a question of what California, er Anaheim, er Los Angeles wants for him.

With Mulder and Edmonds not for sure locked up...
..I don't think we should be jetisoning solid starting pitching for past their prime outfielders.

Marquis allows TLR and Jocketty to make up for bullpen personnel mistakes by giving them an extra bat on the bench.  When we lose that, we lose a guy in the pen or a bat off the bench.

I agree
I would rather see the Cards sign Marquis before any of our other starters. His versatility is a great asset for this team and if he can keep his head on straight he has the stuff to be dominant. With his bat an ERA of 4 is the same as 3.5 for anyone else.

Payton's a nobody
unless his defense is as good as I think UZR had it a few years ago. Even then, he wouldn't be worth it.

What would it take
to get Chase Utley and Bobby Abreu out of Philly?  I've heard Abreu's name bantered in trade talks, but Utley seems pretty popular and not likely to be dealt.

If a trade could be made, it would address the Cards' two biggest needs in one deal (possibly for Marquis/Suppan/outfield prospects?).

by GoCrazyFolks on Apr 28, 2006 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

It would take a lot more than Marquis and Suppan
Especially considering that Cole Hamels appears to be about two weeks away from dominating major league hitters. They wouldn't trade Utley and Abreu in the same deal, it'd be like the Cardinals trading Edmonds and Rolen.

by DanUpBaby on Apr 28, 2006 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No way...
that they are going to trade Utley.  Philly has a pretty decent team, they aren't going to firesale.  Plus, we wouldn't have the prospects anyway.  They could get a better package from someone else.  Abreu they might actually trade, and it would take a starter who could help them now, plus one of our best prospects (Reyes, Wainwright, Lambert, Rasmus, or Haerther)
