dream land

In discussing the upcoming season with a few of my friends and co-workers, all of whom happen to be Cubs fans, it has dawned on me that they all seem to be off in dream land. They all seem to think that Jaque Jones and Juan Pierre are going to cure thier on-base problem, something I can't help but laugh at. The thing that really gets me though is the fact that not one of them believes me when I tell them that Derrek Lee is going to fall back down to earth this year. Apparently they see a 60 point increase in batting average as a normal occurance. I, on the other hand, have already pinpointed Lee as this years Adrian Beltre. I understand that everyone wants to be optimistic about their chances this time of year, but isn't this just a little ridiculous if not border line idiotic?

Derreck lee
he is the big question mark facing the cubs this year.  Everyone is going on and on about the health of prior and wood, but the real question is whether or not lee can maintain anything approaching his level of production last year.  Luis Gonzales might be a better comparison than Adrian Beltre, but ya, you've got to wonder whether or not Lee (who is essentially their entire offense) will fall back to earth this year.

i dunno valatan
even if lee reverts to his 2004 numbers (and i agree that he probably will), he's still above league avg  at his position --- .280 / .360 / .500. prob'y among the top 6 guys at the position in the nl.

but if prior/wood aren't healthy and can't go, their replacements are likely to be below league avg --- a much steeper dropoff.

i could imagine the cubs finishing in the top 3 in the league in scoring even if lee's at his 2004 numbers. but i can't see them finishing top-3 in pitching without 30 starts from either prior or wood.

They gotta
have something to fantasize about. Besides, it's more fun when they get all worked up only to have their hopes and dreams completely destroyed year after year after year...

sorta brings a tear to the eye, doesn't it?

its the cubs
would you expect any thing less than the pumping up thier players.I love when the wind is taken out of thier sails.I just love some of the pictures from the 03 choke job.The best is of a girl in tears like her father had just been ran over by a bus.I would hate that team if i was a chicagoian or a cub fan.

Hateration
of the Cubs has gotten a bit old, IMO. It's just beating a dead horse...
