Rotations

There has been much debate over pitching that I had to figure out some things for me that I would like to share. Here is a list of rotations with 06 ERA and the average ERA. I added Batista to ours which is a mid 4 ERA. This is assuming Clemens and Pettite are not coming back to the Astros and I didn't add the Pirates and Brewers. I figured the Reds, Cubs, Astros, and Cardinals. (Except Cubs all were players last year.)

Cubs
C. Zambrano 3.41
Lilly 4.31
Hill 4.17
Miller 4.57
Marshall 5.59
Avg 4.41 ERA

Reds
Harang 3.76
Arrroyo 3.29
Milton 5.19
Lohse 5.83
Michalak 4.89
AVG 4.592

Astros
Oswalt 2.98
Williams 3.65
Hirsh 6.04
Rodriguez 5.64
Albers 6
AVG 4.862

Cardinal
Carpenter 3.09
Reyes 4.68
Wainwright 4.09 (projected)
Wells 6.50
Batista 4.58
AVG 4.588

Walt in my opinion does not have to focus on pitching. (This of course is assuming we aquire Batista.) This shows that we are right in there rotation-wise with the rest of the Central. (Year to Date) It also gives us the ability to pocket the left over money of 105 mil and honestly make a push for a mid-season salary dump. We really don't have the chips for a major trade so I think we should be patient and use our strength (money) to our advantage. Maybe we get lucky and pick up something off the scrap heap. (eckstienesque) I just don't see this FA market bearing any fruit.

Batista
I think that the notion that Bastista is a lock to sign with us a little short sighted. I think that the Bastista signing was kind of contengent on getting Jason Schmidt in a Cardinals uniform. It was reported that Bastista's decision was between the Cardinals and the Royals. Since then the Royals have signed Gil Meche, which probably takes them out of the running for Bastista. So why has Bastista signed with the Cardinals yet? I think Walt isn't considering signing him anymore now that Schmidt has signed with LA. My humble opinion is that we are going to try to acquire a #2 starter thru a trade or focus on our own FA starters like Supp, Weaver, and Mulder.

Keeping Mulder makes a lot of sense to me. He was pretty damn good in the beginning of the season before his shoulder was injured. I think trading for a Jason Jennings type, and signing Mulder as our number three starter makes a whole lot of sense both practically and economically.

there was...
but we needed Schmidt to sign at a discount rate... which clearly was never going to happen. From what I can tell there is no way possible for us to reach that 100 million dollar pay role with what is left on the market. The great signings of Kennedy and Wells were so good cuz they left us the finanical flexibility to go out and make a strong offer to Schmidt. Now that that is not longer a possibility I just dont see us reaching that pay level and if we do it will be due to unwise spending.

Fine call him mid 4 ERA guy then
You don't have to call him Batista.

How does keeping a guy that won't be available till June make sense? I thought we're trying to win more than 83 games. Who will we trade for Jason Jennings? WHo do the Rockies need of ours? Let me guess Duncan or Encarnacion. Jennings is in the high 3's ERA wise which means more than them. Suppan will get money that the Cardinals don't pay. (Stupid Money) Weaver is our best chance but even he is a question mark. So you can try for a Batista who is a pretty much given, Weaver who pitched light's out for us in the postseason but still came to us broken, Trade Dunc/Enc plus some of the farm for Jennings, or overpay Suppan. Economically you go for Batista. Practically you go for Batista or Weaver.

PS. Jennings IMHO is not a #2 starter.

Rotations...
Hey, what ever happened to Brandon Backe?  I knew he spent a lot of time on the DL last year and was never really with it.  I would have figured he'd find his way back into the Houston rotation this year, if he wasn't an FA, of course.

Backe had...
Tommy John surgery in September and won't be back until 2008. Since he's arb eligible I would guess he might be non-tendered.

As for these rotations, the presence of so many young'uns(AW, Reyes, Hirsh, Marshall) really makes what they did last year irrelevant. Also, Houston isn't done by a long shot. They'll get Clemens back most likely and either bring back Pettitte or acquire someone like Garland. They are going to be tough in 2007.

Acquire Jason Simontacchi!

And just as type that...
Andy Pettitte is back in pinstripes. Cards chances take a tick upward.

Cardinal rotation
Reyes will be better than Wainwright if both are in the rotation, and on everyday rest, not messing with Reyes like the Cardinals did last year.  I think Wainwright is closer to 4.50 ERA while Reyes 4.00 ERA.
No way in hell will Wells be that bad.
Batista wouldn't be that good and the best option for the Cards should be Ohka in my opinion.

Also, just to point this out Jason Hirsh will have a ERA in the mid 4's, not anywhere close to 6.

Sorry but I don't think
Arroyo posts anything south of 3.75 next year.

I just took
ERA at season end. Again it is all a toss up, but I don't think that the Cardinals are in "horrible" shape compared to the rest of the central. To me, there were two pitchers that could have improved us and we couldn't get them. But neither did any of the central. So we have to live with what we got. I tried to find the good news.

SUPPAN ,WEAVER, MULDER
ALL 3 ,2 OF 3 , OR 1 OF THREE . THAT IS THE ANSWER.   SUPPAN AND MULDER IS POSSIBLE AND STILL HAVE ABOUT 10 MIL LEFT. WE WILL HAVE TO OVERPAY FOR SUPPAN A LITTLE BIT
