Rotations
There has been much debate over pitching that I had to figure out some things for me that I would like to share. Here is a list of rotations with 06 ERA and the average ERA. I added Batista to ours which is a mid 4 ERA. This is assuming Clemens and Pettite are not coming back to the Astros and I didn't add the Pirates and Brewers. I figured the Reds, Cubs, Astros, and Cardinals. (Except Cubs all were players last year.)
Cubs
C. Zambrano 3.41
Lilly 4.31
Hill 4.17
Miller 4.57
Marshall 5.59
Avg 4.41 ERA
Reds
Harang 3.76
Arrroyo 3.29
Milton 5.19
Lohse 5.83
Michalak 4.89
AVG 4.592
Astros
Oswalt 2.98
Williams 3.65
Hirsh 6.04
Rodriguez 5.64
Albers 6
AVG 4.862
Cardinal
Carpenter 3.09
Reyes 4.68
Wainwright 4.09 (projected)
Wells 6.50
Batista 4.58
AVG 4.588
My opinions on the next page
Walt in my opinion does not have to focus on pitching. (This of course is assuming we aquire Batista.) This shows that we are right in there rotation-wise with the rest of the Central. (Year to Date) It also gives us the ability to pocket the left over money of 105 mil and honestly make a push for a mid-season salary dump. We really don't have the chips for a major trade so I think we should be patient and use our strength (money) to our advantage. Maybe we get lucky and pick up something off the scrap heap. (eckstienesque) I just don't see this FA market bearing any fruit.

Batista
Keeping Mulder makes a lot of sense to me. He was pretty damn good in the beginning of the season before his shoulder was injured. I think trading for a Jason Jennings type, and signing Mulder as our number three starter makes a whole lot of sense both practically and economically.

How does keeping a guy that won't be available till June make sense? I thought we're trying to win more than 83 games. Who will we trade for Jason Jennings? WHo do the Rockies need of ours? Let me guess Duncan or Encarnacion. Jennings is in the high 3's ERA wise which means more than them. Suppan will get money that the Cardinals don't pay. (Stupid Money) Weaver is our best chance but even he is a question mark. So you can try for a Batista who is a pretty much given, Weaver who pitched light's out for us in the postseason but still came to us broken, Trade Dunc/Enc plus some of the farm for Jennings, or overpay Suppan. Economically you go for Batista. Practically you go for Batista or Weaver.
PS. Jennings IMHO is not a #2 starter.

Backe had...
As for these rotations, the presence of so many young'uns(AW, Reyes, Hirsh, Marshall) really makes what they did last year irrelevant. Also, Houston isn't done by a long shot. They'll get Clemens back most likely and either bring back Pettitte or acquire someone like Garland. They are going to be tough in 2007.

Cardinal rotation
No way in hell will Wells be that bad.
Batista wouldn't be that good and the best option for the Cards should be Ohka in my opinion.
Also, just to point this out Jason Hirsh will have a ERA in the mid 4's, not anywhere close to 6.
