Cards made a 3/45 offer to Pettite....

and he turned it down, because he wouldn't sign with the Astros rivals. Damn him and his loyalty.

Agreed
Bold move, but I gotta say that I for one am glad Pettite passed.  If true, I am also happy to see the Cards making a competitive offer.  To get Pettite they would have had to overpay.  I for one would rather make a 3Y/$50m to Zito than a 3Y $45M to Pettite.  Just my personal opinion.  If you are going to overpay....

very surprised
that is two offers walt has apparently made this offseason that i would not have expected him to make, the other being the offer to schmidt

i think these offers show how badly he wanted a true number two, but he now feels with no number two in sight, why bother with another 4 or 5 starter when looper, thompson, narveson could be as good as any of the 4-5 guys who are available

Pujols is the greatest Cardinal in my lifetime.
