Great Cardinal Nick -Names

I am leaving the obvious. And I preclude this with this statement, "Please don't hate me". We all love these guys.

My favorite of all time from CardNilly- Upper-Deck Steche
My worst- Juan Enc/Izzy---> Only from permission from Larry will I reveal this.
Lankford- buddies always called him Crank-Ford
Ron Gant- "Damn, He almost hit a  ron gnat."
Mark Whitten- Hittin' Whitten ( those type of things.)
please please give me more throughout the day. I get bored.

NickNames
A couple I enjoy:

Eckersley = Upper-Deck Eck
Taguchi =  GoochFuzz
Rolen = S-Cooter
Duncan = Cinder Blocks (in reference to his glovework)

by DuncanDipper on Dec 14, 2006 10:04 AM EST   0 recs

Bad memories.
When I read cinder blocks the first thing I thought of was those big cinder block hands holding the WS trophy while he was humping it. I'm going to have to sterilize my brain now.
My favorite is Yoda for the Jedi behind the plate.

not a nickname...
I kinda like mispronouncing eckstein's name as eck-STEEN in front of Cardinals fans I've never met before at bars. They make this really strange look that probably means something in between "what the f-- did you just say, I thought you were a fan," and "I'm gonna kill you." and I just laugh a little to myself.

whatever.

whoops...
if you ever try it, its better if you just keeeeep doing it.  if they're nice they'll try to politely pronounce it correctly in front of you.  ignore it.  keep saying it wrong.

Even better
Is to shout "come on Alex" every time Pujols comes to bat.

In re: Chris Duncan
You're killin' me "Smalls"! That poor kid from The Sandlot couldn't field at all but managed to hit a ball over the fence.

Hmm
I know the inclusion of "Sno Cones" goes without saying, but I think it should be said anyway.

I remember good ol' Tripp Cromer, one of Ozzie's AAA injury replacements in the early-to-mid nineties, going through a Snoconesque power surge and being dubbed with the simple-yet-elegant "Homer Cromer".

If you want to go old-school, "Ducky Wucky" for Joe Medwick (after a reporter overheard some starry-eyed girl say, "Oh, isn't he the Ducky Wucky") was a great one, all the funnier given his abrasive personality.

Mmmm...
Tripp Cromer. I was trying to decide who my next name on a jersey would be. I knew I could go with the obvious ones, but I thought it would be fun to pick some obscure name from the past 10 years or so, and Cromer was the first name I thought of.

Last winter
I put up a similar post.

I'm still partial to Ron "Can't."

a few
-I took to calling Wainwright "Root Beer" during the playoffs.

-For some reason I decided Encarnacion looked like Snoop Dogg one day. So he was "Snoop" from about June on.

-I always call Taguchi "The Gooch" as I imagine many people do. During a game when he and JuanE were playing, I came up with the amazing idea for a sitcom called "Snoop and the Gooch." I'm pretty sure it would be the best thing ever.

OH WOW!!!!
I'm sooo glad you said that.  I though I was the only one...

COME ON!

well I'll be
I'd never actually looked at the two side-by-side. The resemblance is quite frightening.

On of my favorites
was with Ronnie Belliard.  The name "Jaba."  That was great.  Got my Grandpa hooked on it too.

Blooper was a good one.  Easily know who it is, describes how he pitches.

Everytime my Grandpa and I are talking he says,"Who is that dipshit who won't listen to Duncan?"  Thus Marquis's nick-name stuck.

duncan = leatherface
I like to call Chris Duncan Leatherface because of the way he hacks at the ball and butchers left field.

My faves
A few from the 80s:

Tom Flawless
Silent George
Joaquin Underwear (I was 6 years old and couldn't say Andujar, so it came out Underwear, it stuck)
Tom Herr - Herr-cules
Alan "Play" Knicely

My favorite from that era was the nickname for Tom Nieto. We were at a game in '85 and Nieto hit a triple or something stupid, totally unexpected and my 70-year grandma stands up and starts chanting "NEAT-O, NEAT-O" It was priceless.....

More recent:
Julian Tavarez - "Freddy Kruger"
Looper - "Pooper"
Isringhausen - "Easy Izzy"

Belly Lard
I think Belly Lard is kind of weird playing next to Pooh-holes.

by Birdos in Mexico on Dec 15, 2006 7:17 PM EST   0 recs

A few nicknames by me.
Julian Tavarez - Frankenstein (from the movie Big Daddy)
Isringhausen - Gas can
Juan Encarnacion - Juan speed
Gary Bennett - An American Classic
Adam Kennedy - Assassination
Aaron Miles - Miles away from good. NO nickname for him.

Only one I really like
My father and I began calling Julian Tavarez slingblade after he glared a batter back to second base one night.  I attempted to figure what he might have been thinking at that moment, and suddenly the voice of Billy Bob Thornton spoke in my head.  Tavarez has similar mannerisms, with the sort of roosterish head movements, as well as looking quite a bit like the character.  I'm telling you.  Slingblade.

Oh, one more.  I've been trying to convince everyone I know to call Wainwright Death From Above, in reference to his curveball.  They mostly ignore me.  Also, the ones who know there's a disco/metal band by the same name tend to beat me up, so I may quit attempting the pied piper act on this one.
