Oquendo staying put?

There are still several managerial openings but it looks as if Oquendo is going to be the Cardinals 3rd base coach again next year. San Fran was the one team reported in having significant interent in Oquendo and they hired Bruce Bochey. The only two teams left with spots to fill are the Nationals and the A's. Jose doesn't seem like Billy Bean's type of manager so the only real threat are the Nationals. Lets hope Jose sticks around for a few more years so he can take over once Tony rides off into the sunset.

OK by me
I'm a fan of the ol' "Secret Weapon." In fact, I'd even like to see Cards do something never seen before in MLB--at least I don't think so. Something that has been done in collegiate athletics a few times--and that is announce Oquendo as TLR's successor whenever it is TLR decides to step down. Michigan State basketball did it with Tom Izzo when Jud Heathcote (sp?) was starting to look ahead to retirement and Wisconsin FB recently did it when Barry Alvarez (sp?) was looking to give up coaching.

TLR has hinted at resigning here and there over last two years although I know he said something to the effect of being renergized by the World Series win. Still, to know the reigns would be handed to Oquendo whenever TLR does decide to move on I think would sit well with a lot of Cards fans. It would be a unique concept. Just throwing it out there for thought and banter.

That would be perfect...
...for us, but I almost hate to hold Jose back from other opportunities.  Although I have to admit that I was happy to hear that he won't get a managerial job next season, so we can keep him as Tony's successor.

Oquendo
I think LaRussa is done after the 2007 season so if he is I hope Oquendo gets the job.  I think he has been groomed to be LaRussa's successor, even though the Cards haven't held him back from trying to get managerial jobs elsewhere.

Sounds good to me
As much as I can't imagine the St. Louis Cardinals without TLR, I think Oquendo would ease my suffering considering he's been in the system for some years now.

Plus this could open the door to a new third base coach. (Willie McGee anyone???)

does anyone
Have any clue what oquendo's style will be?  I have no idea if I want him managing the team or not.  He could be the next Dusty Baker for all we know.

Generally,
I'm a believer in the 'don't manage for your former team' rule of managing--it seems to result in pretty harsh feelings afterward, i.e.,

Larry Bowa
Alan Trammel
Joe Torre, etc.

Pete Rose is a special case, as he transitioned from player/manager to manager, but even that didn't end well.
