Ankiel '07

I was reading that God awful espn site and came across an article about our buddy Rick.

Here is the link http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2654068

In short, it says he plans to return to the outfield and looks like he will be ready for spring training.

You know I have a soft spot for the guy but do I really think he can make this team? No. However, I sure hope he does. The guy can sure hit, but somehow I wish he would step back on that rubber and give it another try.

I highly doubt he'll be on the 25
to start the year, but he's probably better than your average AAA outfielder option--I'd certainly rather have him than Skip Schumaker, for instance.

Come on, man, just try a little Brooks Kieschnick action.

Why does he have to clear waivers again?
Isn't he just a minor leaguer now?  Had we held on to Dennis Tankersley, would he have had to clear waivers?

out of options
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_transactions

Scroll down to the "options" section.  The meaningful text:

"If a player is on the 40-man roster and not the active 25 man roster for any part of more than three seasons, he is out of options and may not be assigned to the minors without first clearing waivers."

Ankiel
He'd be a nice surprise, especially with his pop and athleticism.  However, I doubt he makes it.  Isn't it ironic that he injured himself on a fly ball hit by Larry Bigbie of all people?
"I only am who I am because I was born that way. I have a gift and I'm trying to not be selfish about it, but to use it, OK? Jealousy will get you nowhere!"
