Cy Young travesty
According to baseballmusings, Hoffman is the frontrunner to take the hardware today.
May I just say, it would be a travesty... Hoffman's era is less than a run better than Carp's and his WHIP is only .1 better. You have to be a lot better than that if you're only going to pitch 63 innings. Moreover, he blew 6 saves. Izzy led the league with 10 (I think).
It's as if no one can decide between Webb/Oswalt/Carp, so they give it to the fourth best candidate in order to avoid deciding. I think the Cy should be decided by a formula involving innings pitched, runs allowed, and baserunners allowed. Thoughts?

Cy
I'm more concerned about Pujols repeating as MVP. His stats (other than HR's and RBI) are better than Howard's and Pujols missed 17 games due to injury. Had he played in those games and had he been able to keep his momentum going from April & May, I think he'd beat Howard in HR's and RBI and be a no-brainer for the award. I just hope the media doesn't screw him out of the award.

If howard gets the mvp
Carp/Webb/Oswalt
If Carp doesn't win, Oswalt should.
Trevor Hoffman doesn't even belong in the discussion. Gagne deserved it in 2003, but as a whole relievers shouldn't win it.

Closer Bitterness?
Hoffman has been an excellent closer his whole career, he broke the saves record, and he was a very good closer this year.
You can say no closer deserve the Cy Young without being completely dominant, but I could challenge you with the notion that no starter who won 16 or fewer games and had an ERA over 3 deserves the Cy Young either. This was a down year in the NL for pitching. Hoffman, in my mind, was the best closer and the most deserving Cy Young candidate in a VERY down year for NL pitching.
oh yeah, for MVP.
Howard was being treated like Barry Bonds of the last few years in September, and while the Phillies didn't make the playoffs, Howard was carrying them after the Abreu trade, and damn near got them into the playoffs on his own.
I'm not advocating that Howard deserves it over Pujols, but I think it's a tossup and it wouldn't be a travesty as long as those two finish 1-2.
As far as Beltran, look at his stats, he doesn't even compare against the other two, the other case you can make is that he was on the best team in the NL. If that's your only criteria, Derek Jeter ought to have about the last eight AL MVPs.
