Cy Young travesty

According to baseballmusings, Hoffman is the frontrunner to take the hardware today.

May I just say, it would be a travesty... Hoffman's era is less than a run better than Carp's and his WHIP is only .1 better. You have to be a lot better than that if you're only going to pitch 63 innings. Moreover, he blew 6 saves. Izzy led the league with 10 (I think).

It's as if no one can decide between Webb/Oswalt/Carp, so they give it to the fourth best candidate in order to avoid deciding. I think the Cy should be decided by a formula involving innings pitched, runs allowed, and baserunners allowed. Thoughts?

Cy
Unfortunately, I think Carpenter shot himself in the foot late in the season.  I'd love for him to win it, but I think the award will go to Webb or Oswalt.  I can't really pick a clear-cut winner so I'll be pleasantly surprised if Carp can win it again this year.

I'm more concerned about Pujols repeating as MVP.  His stats (other than HR's and RBI) are better than Howard's and Pujols missed 17 games due to injury.  Had he played in those games and had he been able to keep his momentum going from April & May, I think he'd beat Howard in HR's and RBI and be a no-brainer for the award.  I just hope the media doesn't screw him out of the award.

If howard gets the mvp
with his barely-mendoza-line BA_RISP, it'll be a true tragedy.

Carp/Webb/Oswalt
I don't really understand why you would pick Webb over Carpenter. They had such similar years statsitically, but Carp went to the playoffs AND is the incumbent. I just don't see the logic in picking Webb as the Cy Young.

If Carp doesn't win, Oswalt should.

Trevor Hoffman doesn't even belong in the discussion. Gagne deserved it in 2003, but as a whole relievers shouldn't win it.

Carp
does not deserve the Cy this year. It should go to either Hoffman or Oswalt.

I think you mean...
Webb or Oswalt. Sure, Hoffman was decent...but the best picher in the National League? He was never a guy who came in and you thought, "welp, this one's over" like Gagne in '03. You gotta be untouchable as a closer to get the Cy Young, imo, and Hoffman was not that.

i'm of the opinion that
closers ain't Cy Youngs. Not unless they are darn dominant. 04 Izzy was nearly as good, if not as good as 06 Hoffman, did he get any Cy votes. IMO, Webb was a very good choice. So would've been Roy O. So would've been Carp. I ain't upset by this.

Agreed
I have to think Hoffman is in the mix mainly due to his breaking of the all-time saves record. I just hope the voters remember his All-Star choke...

Closer Bitterness?
Do I sense some closer bitterness due to Izzy sucking?

Hoffman has been an excellent closer his whole career, he broke the saves record, and he was a very good closer this year.

You can say no closer deserve the Cy Young without being completely dominant, but I could challenge you with the notion that no starter who won 16 or fewer games and had an ERA over 3 deserves the Cy Young either.  This was a down year in the NL for pitching.  Hoffman, in my mind, was the best closer and the most deserving Cy Young candidate in a VERY down year for NL pitching.

oh yeah, for MVP.
It's definitely a tossup and I definitely hope Pujols wins it, but if you're saying Howard isn't a deserving candidate and Beltran is more deserving, then you obviously haven't been watching any games outside the Cardinals this season.

Howard was being treated like Barry Bonds of the last few years in September, and while the Phillies didn't make the playoffs, Howard was carrying them after the Abreu trade, and damn near got them into the playoffs on his own.

I'm not advocating that Howard deserves it over Pujols, but I think it's a tossup and it wouldn't be a travesty as long as those two finish 1-2.

As far as Beltran, look at his stats, he doesn't even compare against the other two, the other case you can make is that he was on the best team in the NL.  If that's your only criteria, Derek Jeter ought to have about the last eight AL MVPs.
