World Series Game 4 overflow

not a work of art . . . but man i will take it. the cards did a lot of things right, tigers did a lot of things wrong --- with results as you would expect.

that's the cards' 5th come-from-behind win this postseason; their 4th from a deficit of 2 runs or more; and their 2d comeback from 3 runs down. they are 5 games over this postseason --- same number of games over they were during the 2006 regular season.

and they can win a world title tomorrow.

Update [2006-10-27 1:54:44 by Valatan]:: Fungoes breaks down the pitching matchups for the rest of the series. Let's hope that we're only looking at tomorrow.

I've never seen a game like that!
Unbelievable...obviously not a classic in terms of quality of play, but definitely a classic in terms of roller coaster and feeling like it was meant to be for us!

I feel major jinxing going on.

I'm as happy as you could possibly believe but you don't want to count your chickens before they hatch.  Especially with the way the past two St. Louis-Detroit World Series have gone.

Like I mentioned in the game thread...
If the Tigers lose tomorrow, I'm not going to be ashamed at all.

The Cardinals are just playing better and making plays when they need them.  Detroit had their opportunities and blew them.

I would love to have seen how this would turn out if the Tigers were playing their best (or even somewhat well), but they left their mojo back in the ALCS.

Yup...
win or lose, there's no way that I can dislike this Tiger team. Yeah, I know Brandon Inge personally, but that's just a tiny part of it. They are a very good team that has just run into some good pitching and some bad luck. I wanna give big props to you, too, muldster..

I will not be ashamed of the Tigers either
They have had a great season and postseason run.  I hate to see them make costly mistakes in the WS, though, because avoiding those type of things really contributed to their success this season.

I must give props to the Cards pitching, though.  Either they are doing stuff incredibly right or the Tigers have reverted to the "got swept by the Royals" team that finished the regular season.

Cards Fans...
I just want to say that I'm sure you guys are having a blast watching this team win these WS games.

The Cardinals are doing everything they need to do to win these games and are very deserving of the position they are in.  Obviously I'm disappointed in the W-L record for the Tigers this WS, but I must say that there isn't much I can say other than they are getting beat by a more prepared team both physically and mentally right now.

Of course I'll be rooting hard for 3 straight wins, but it's going to take a drastic change in about every facet of the game.

You guys have a great community here, keep up the good work to the writers and frequent contributors.

for the compliment on the blog.  I took it over a couple months ago from an old writer, it was pretty void of any kind of real community...it's been a tough road but I'll just keep on churning out stuff and hope the people come, similar to what you have here.

I hope that there hasn't been any flaming going on around here from any Tigers fans, I haven't really read any of the past game threads or anything.  If so, I'm sure that they've been put in their place based on where this series stands.

Secret Sauce
Don't know how many of you read baseball prospectus but they have a stat they call "Secret Sauce" that is their formula for success in the postseason.  Long story short, nothing matters (not experience, small ball, nothing) except having strikeout pitchers, a good fielding team, and a top-notch closer.

Coming in to the playoffs, we were the weakest of the playoff teams by this formula, mostly b/c we were 2nd to last in baseball in K/9 and had Izzy as our closer for most of the year.  Who would have predicted we'd be in this position w/ our rotation and a closer w/ what, 3 career saves?  Minnesota was ranked 1st overall and the Mets (w/ Pedro and El Duque) were 1st in the NL.  It seems to have gotten all backwards this postseason. It also seems as though our experience is really paying off and the Tigers' youth has really been a detriment (to this point).  Maybe it'll make for interesting discussion.

by chuckb on Oct 27, 2006 12:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

the cards are striking guys out now
they have a higher k/9 in the playoffs than any team except the tigers and the dogers.

they rebuilt their pitching staff to feature their strikeout pitchers, and they've gotten 1/3 of their starts from their best strikeout pitcher (carpenter). they've gotten 0 innings from jason marquis, who doesn't strike people out; most of the bullpen innings have gone to their best k/9 guys (wainwright kinney johnson).

I admit...
at the end of the season I thought we would get swept by anyone even if we did make the post-season, but I have enjoyed watching everygame.  I can only hope that I finally get to see them undo the shame/injustice of '85, '87, and '04.  For some of us that's all we have.  I love this team because of the little guys.  I think AP is great, both smart and a power hitter.  I like a team with guys like Eckstein winning games though.  It would be a great way to break in the new park if we can win it tomorrow, but of course, it ain't over till the fat lady sings.  Go Redbirds!!!

Props to P-Dub -
who takes a lot of grief (most of it earned) in this forum for his porous bat.

TONIGHT, if not for a certain diminutive shortstop, would have been his night. I know he amassed 150 ribbies one year in Denver, but he'd cash em all in for that one, sweet, go-ahead single in the 7th inning. Beyond huge against flamethrower Rodney.

And some great leather in left as well.

Let's all tip our caps!

Game 4 WS Simulation...
Pujols and Pudge each hit three-run bombs in the 1st, and it stayed 3-3 until the 7th, when both Soup and Bonderman were pulled. The AI LaRussa really likes Looper, and rode him for three scoreless innings, while the Tigers burned three relievers to preserve the 3-3 tie. Bottom of the 9th, pinch hitter So Taguchi hits a gapper and takes advantage of a missed diving catch in right field for maybe the first-ever walk-off inside the park home run. I was almost cheering as loud as I later cheered for Eckstein and his game winning hit off of a missed diving catch! 4-3 Cards win and are 3-1 in the sim-series.

Nope
They'd like you to think they play "Ozzie-ball", which is some sort of small-ball apparantly, but if you watch them play it's all softball.

Both this year and last year they've scored over half their runs via the long ball.  Plus, they play in a hitters park.

and it pretty much was.  The Simulator gave the Tigers just barely over a 50% win expectancy in game 4.  The defense cost them this game.  I will run the numbers on game 5 when I get a good idea who the probable pitchers are and then I will post the game 5 win expectancies here.

I can't believe
Keith Law is blaming the wet grass! What a bunch of BS. Both Granderson and Rodney explicitly gave other reasons for their mistakes - loss of balance, trying to throw the ball softly (in Rodney's case). Maybe they don't want to make excuses for themselves, but I take them at their word. Apparently Law doesn't. He's too busy making excuses for them. Does he have some axe to grind against the Cards?

my heart, my stomach, my CARDINALS
What a fricking game!!

I had a sick feeling, all day.  Too much waiting around, too much Soup hype.

Soup starts off shaky, the 0-34 dudes start whacking the ball around

We start chipping away, Soup just gears down and GRINDS through six

I called the wild throw on So's bunt -- on the WRONG THREAD!!! -- and we surge ahead

Then Blooper has a bad couple of hitters, AWesome comes in and Inge hits it farther than he EVER has - can't blame JEdward for that one.

The AWeswome strikes out the last two, and I'm thinking Pujols in the 9th, but Eck finds the loose lace in their OF's glove

and AWesome just ICES 'em down in the 9th

I couldn't breathe from the 6th inning on.  Couldn't sit down.  Couldn't talk.  Couldn't laugh/cry.  Clenched my fists (and toes) for the last hour and a half.

the problem...
Suppan's a "big game pitcher"

with a 2 games to 1 series advantage, playing at home, I just don't think the game was quite big enough for Suppan.  The prima donna.  I can just picture him now.

"Jeff Suppan doesn't pitch unless Jeff Suppan's back is against the wall.  Detroit's a small market."  --Jeff Suppan

Kudos to Tony for leaving him in there in the 5th, letting him finnish what could likely be his last start as a cardinal with an out, rather than a mid-inning substitution.

Basically, another tight game that could go either way.  But the Cardinals are slight favorites to win the W.S. tomorrow (weather permitting).  1,000 games were simulated and then each team's pythagorean winning percentage is used as their win expectancy.  So far the simulator has predicted the Cards to win 3 games and the Tigers to win 1.  Guess what!!!  vr, Xei

Wouldn't it have made more sense to have Edmonds bunt and move the runners to 2nd and 3rd? I realize Edmonds has been hitting pretty well in the Series, but you have a much hotter Rolen behind him, and also a chance for a hotter Molina behind him and a few others.

I just found it odd they let Edmonds swing away. I have seen very few big at bats turn out positive when Edmonds is up in the playoffs.

Thoughts?

p.s. if they did have edmonds bunt, so scores easily, pujols might stop at 3rd, and Molina is up......

no bunt
you don't have your better hitters bunt, unless of course your name is Jim Tracy.  Bunting, while good for one run late in the game usually takes you out of any possible big inning and the Cardinals already had a man in scoring position.  If the pitcher is dumb enough to throw the ball down the right field line, then bunt all the time, right! :)  vr, Xei

you don't usually bunt
with your cleanup hitter. Edmonds is actually a really good bunter, but I would much rather have him swing away.

and as an FYI
In case you are one of the three billion people who search for it on Yahoo, Google, or whatever and end up at my blog as a result, David Eckstein is not Jewish.

There.  I said it.

Good night and win one for Jack and DK.

I think Spiezio, Belly and Juan
need to start tomorrow.

We've had big stuff from Eck, Gooch, Preston, Yadi, Albert, Jimmy, Scotty, Miles, Duncan.

The only guys who haven't really contributed offensively are Spiezio, Belliard, Juan and Bennett.

Ah well, just win.

Walk your dog, not Pujols.

just a prediction-
But I think Pujols is going to have a HUGE game tomorrow if he's pitched to at all. Just a hunch. He seems to be the only Cardinal to have not had one yet, and he lives for the moment.

The beauty of this postseason is how they've done it as a team-after relying on a few players all year, they've received big contributions from almost everyone. It's amazing.

God, I can't wait until tomorrow night. MUST FORCE SELF TO GET BACK TO WORK...

Wow, I missed most of the game,
but after the first 3 inning, I wouldn't have guessed this outcome.  Cool.

Coming late to the afterparty
But I'd just like to add that while I'm holding my emotions in check, it's pretty hard to do so.

I kept The 26th Girl up way past her bedtime with all my hooting and hollering. She was yelling down from her bedroom for me to knock it off.

The 26th Boy was sawing logs no problem, tho.

We can do this, folks. Believe.

Baseball Gods
Pitching in on the weather, too.

At the NOAA website, the midnight post shows heavy rain moving outta the area in the afternoon.

Gametime should be mostly cloudy, very windy, and 41 degrees.

nice
four hits, three doubles (off three different pitchers), 2 RBI, plus the long foul ball in the 1st. That missed being a HR by about 20-30 feet or so. That was a big ol game from the little guy.

Chris Duncan
SB Nation's John Sickels did a prospect review of Chris Duncan today.

Not sure if that was already pointed out, but he's always worth listening to. He wrote of Craig Monroe and Juan Encarnacion in the past few days as well.

ok
i was at the game...oh my goodness......it was the shit, i had tix for wed night, now good for friday, stuck in stl for 3 days, went to game 4 (game 5 ticket) and it was amazing. i've been coming to stl since i was 9, it is my favorite place...i love the cardinals more than anything, i've come to new busch all summer. never ever ever ever, and i saw tiger woods win the masters in a playoff and was at the opener of the superdome a few monday nights ago, ever have a seen an atmosphere like i did tonight. the was the deal, i will never forget it, i dont feel bad for det about all of the errors, i have watched it, in 96, 00, 02, 03 (reg season), 04 and 05 (thats just my memory) kill themselves the same way. piss on detroit, granted, they are awesome, and if not for the redbirds, i would without doubt be for det against anyone....but piss on em.
i wanna win tomorrow night, for us all, for old people in the stands, for all the idiots (self included) spending more money than they have on tickets, for jimmy edmonds, the rookie pen, lboros, red, stan, brock and gibby, mike shannon, joe buck, billy bo thornton, tony la russa, all the hot slutty girls  wearing red that were dancing on the stage at al hrabowskis tonight, dk57 and because i will be there, biting my nails, hanging on every pitch, dancing the the left field bleachers.......please let us win, our fans everywhere want it so bad....lets go 83 win cards....albert tomorrow, big and legendary

to make you laugh, dusty baker came into the centerfield pisser, when he was recognized, a chant of "dusty sucks" took over the mens room, pretty funny, though i think dusty isnt all bad

Baseball Heaven??? They tore that down last year

PS
I think it's funny that everyone let AW off the hook for the 2B to Inge. It was Looper's runner that scored, so Loop got a hold, yet "allowed" a runner to score. Wainwright managed to get a blown save--without allowing any runs to score!--and then the victory as well. Weird.

So Adam won Looper-style--a blown save wiped out by a comeback. Looper had I think 9 wins this year, and how many of them were following blown saves?

Anyway....AW still got 5 outs in a row, so hey.

I cannot comprehend what I am seeing.
This is flat out amazing folks. Amazing that this Cardinals team of the 83 reagular season wins is up 3-1 on the mighty detroit tigers. Who like the all to recent past Cardinals teams breezed throught the regular season, DS&LDS series. And is now facing elimation from what can at best be described as a inferior team. It's just blows my fragil mind at the level of play that this Cardinals team is preforming at. Under the brightes light. The highest pressue packed moments. And through it all the bat is being taken out of the hands of the greatest player to every walk the face of the earth. He may not be now, but when his career is over write this down and put it in your pocket for later, because when that moment comes, and my friends IT WILL COME. Albert Pujols will be forever known as the greatest player to EVER play baseball.

Tonights game was not played as well as most games they played so far in October. SUP just didn't have his A game. But just like SUP, he did not give in. He could have given up 7or8 runs easily tonight. But he did not. He bore down and held the damage to the bare minimun till the offence played catch up. And oh how they caught up. Doubles by a always hustling Scotty Rolen. And a rip past the diving 3rd baseman for YADDA YADDA YADDA. Seriously YADDA is killing the ball. Finally his hard hits are finding the holes that eluded him all season. A rutine fly ball to center that the wet turf somehow tuned into a double. Another wild throw by a young pitcher trying too hard to make a perfect play. A unlikly base hit from a player left for dead on the waver wire. And then again one inning later after the bullpen bent, but did not break, a part timer who has allready looked death in the face, and death blinked, beat out a sure rally killing double play. And then, the smallest man on the field once agin steped to the plate and showed the world just how big time he really is by grabing destiny by the throat once again and claiming it as his birthright. Shorted up with his pesky swing, and shot a rocket to left center. That on any other night would have been just a loud out. But on this night, this fatefull night, it too foud green salavation in the wet outfield grass. Just out of reach of a diving for his life leftfielder. And then our newest star continued his march to immortality by disposing of the high power detroit middle of the order batters.

Yes folks, this truly is a Red October Miracle. There is simply no other plausible explination for the level of play this team is at right now. All the right breaks are falling for this team. All the right moves are being made by Tony. It seams like finally the worm has turned for our beloved Cardinals. And now, under the brightest lights, our team is the shining star. All glory and praise should be given to the Almight GOD. Because this is truly his handy work.

THANK

YOU

GOD

But tomorrow is a new day. The tigers will not go down without a fight. Leyland knows us all to well. He will not allow his team to loose without first throwing everything they have at our Cardinals. Verlander is a hard throwing, take no prisoners, young, wet behind the ears pitcher. He can carve up our lineup faster than a fat guy carves a turkey on Turkey Day. Their lineup is filled with bats that at any given moment can put up crooked number and crooked number. Dream Weaver has his work cut out for him. Odds once again our not in his favor. He is pitching at home, against a power hitting aggressive team. In order to win he needs to have pinpoint accuracy, and control of all his pitches. Move the ball in and out from the hitters. Keep them guesssing and off balance. If he can do that, and our hitters can rattle young Verlander early. The corks will be a poppin in the grand ol'e town of St. Louis, and all over Cardinal nation tomorrow night. But if not, if our bats go silent once again. If Dream Weaver has a relapse. We head to cold detroit, were are championship winning hopes lay on the equally young, but capable shoulders of one Anthony Reyes. Facing a dirty foe who they call kenny rogers. A soft tossing lefty pitcher if there ever was one. Capable of cutting threw are lineup like a knife threw butter.

But what it comes down to now is, our guys have put themselves in a heck of a good spot. Up 3 games to 1. Playing at home. With all the muched hyped Momentum. With a chance to close out one of the more improable WS championships EVER. And that is as great of a spot as any team could ever hope for.

I do not believe what I am seeing. It defies all known logic. It proves all the experts wrong. It's stunning in it's simplicity. One more win for the ultimate prize. One more win for greatness. One more win. That's all any of us could ever,EVER hope for. One more win is all everyone one of us is asking for.

After 24 heartbreaking years, sweet glorious victory is within reach. But we have all been here many times before. We know what can happen. Most of us have seen what can go wrong from here on out. Victory is not yet ours. The long hard fight is not over. There lies before us a minefield filled with bloop hits, untimely strike outs, too many runners left on base. And bone crushing heart breaking losses. Or sweet glorious VICTORY. It is ours for the taking. Can they do it? Will a miracle happen tomorrow night? Will destiny be ours? Are they up to the challenge? Can they finish the fight and make all theirs, and ours dream come true? Are they ready?

Are you ready?

As the legen himself once said,

"We'll see you, tomorrow night."

Good night VEB.

Go get'em guys.

Keep making us all so very proud to say we are St. Louis Cardinals Fans.

Go down swinging.

And most importantly,

GO CARDINALS

From THE MAN, to Gibby, to The Wizard, to Albert the Great. Cardinal Tradition lives on.

And the lack of respect continues...
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/10/25/heyman.series/

However, I will admit that this is an interesting tidbit from the article (though written before last night):

"The Cardinals are outhitting the Tigers .196 to .185 through three games."

That dude is a shithead
I believe he exposed himself in the article.  He rambles aimlessly about the series, obviously haveing no solid point. He talks about how it'd be better if a NY team woulda made it.  Then he immediately starts talking about the Met's prospects next year. His other most-recent article is about the Yankees.

His bias is obvious.  His point is tired. The thing that irritates me is the unabashed effort to ridicule anything that isn't about NY.  He essentially says he dislikes everything about the Midwest.
It seems that if the national isn't really that interested in the series for what it is.
They want to spin the series into a soap opera, and get their drama fix.
The truth is that these two teams are truly teams.  They don't seek the spotlight or other undeserved attention.  They're simply trying to be the best at their sport and quietly doing it the right way.
