Chick Hafey was my grandfathers uncle...

As fans of the Red Birds, you must to a man (or a gal), know that Chick played for the Cardinals back in the 30's (Gashouse Gang). He was just good enough to be selected into the National Hall of Fame.

Well, my grandfather, Dave Strong, was pretty reknown as an athlete himself. He was offered a contract to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers back in 1946. He turned this down.

Why...well, my grandmother, and his commitment as a father of two children is the reason why he didn't play ball.

However, this past Thursday, the Dodgers allowed him to spend 90 minutes on the field, running the bases, getting a feel for what its like to walk between the white lines.

LA Times sports columnist Bill Plaschke interviewed him, and the story ran in todays LA Times.

The story can also be found on the LA Times web site (Veteran's Day is the title of the article):http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb/dodgers/la-sp-plaschke16sep16,1,4370550.column?coll=la-he adlines-sports

I thought that perhaps his story might be an interesting read to you Red Birds.
