Brad Thompson

Ok, so Thompson had another good outing before TLR pulled him too early and made a game of it - I had a question - wasn't he a starter in the minors? If so, I was thinking we'd be serving him better with some long relief, instead of these 1-2 inning stints every once in awhile - I haven't yet seen him get into trouble, and while that's a good thing, I don't like that every time he gets taken out, it seems like the next guy screws up.

but I don't know whether or not he was projected to be a starter in the majors--he did have that three inning save a couple of weeks ago.  It'll be interesting to see wha tthey do with Thompson when silent cal comes back.

Thompson has been gold so far. Taking him out at that precise moment in the game is one of those TLR decisions that leaves me completely baffled and then pissed. I trust LaRussa ( I mean, just look at the Flubs for what lazy and  ineffective managing gets ya). He really is among the great managers the Birds have ever had--hell, Whitey won only ONE World Series (something LaRussa HAS already done)--but LaRussa sometimes makes those moves that leave my lower jaw swinging below my jewels. What sense did that move make? And it almost proved their undoing--against a team, in a game, that they should have crushed!! They gave our boys every opportunity to utterly destroy them, and our boys almost handed it all back on a plate. A "W" is a "W", but do even the easy games have to be so tough? Thank all the gods for Izzy (and Mabry).

thompson's pitches
really break. i saw him for the first time the other night on espn and the movement on his pitches is dazzling. got to be very tough for hitters who've never seen him before. i wonder though if the league will adjust over time, lay off those pitches and let  them break outside the strike zone . . . . . early returns are great, let's see how he does as the summer progresses.

Re: Thompson starting
He was a starter through last year, but--coincidental to his callup--was converted to relief in Spring Training, apparently because Duncan felt his two-pitch sinker ensemble was better suited for a bullpen role.
