Hagin out, Rooney in

According to STL Today.

I didn't mind Hagin all that much, though I've heard good things about this Rooney guy as well.

I will miss the commercials for hand sanitizer that Hagin did.  For some reason that one always cracked me up.

I wonder if that Todd Helton flap on Hagin's part had anything to do with his being let go.

What do all of y'all think??

Hot stove action!
I know I'm one of about twelve people in Saint Louis who don't absolutely hate Hagin...I just feel bad for him, coming to St. Louis and having to replace a recently deceased legend, all the while sitting next to another area legend...tough situation to get in to.

He's not a horrible announcer and would probably do better in a new market.

I don't recall ever listening to Rooney before. Has anyone here heard him? How do you think he'll get along with Mike?

Cheers, Alex Fritz

didn't realize this:
Rooney was the Cardinals' first choice previous to hiring Hagin.

My Chicago friends are very keen on Rooney, and say he will fit in much better in STL than Hagin; Cardinal fans will like him like they like Shannon.

I agree that Hagin had a tough situation to walk into here in St. Louis.  Following up a legend like Jack Buck is never easy.  I still think Hagin is one of the better announcers in the game.  After a full season of listening to various clubs via the MLB radio feeds, I realized how lousy so many of the announcers are in other cities.  Hagin sounds like Vin Scully compared to a lot of the guys in the business!  (Cardinals fans are kind of spoiled in this way.)

I've heard Rooney
a few times, and he's pretty good. To be honest, I think Hagin's days were numbered. When KTRS held ther presser to announce the Cards move, Shannon was there, but Hagin was nowhere to be seen. Plus, the whole deal with Todd Helton couldn't have made the owners happy.
According to the story in the P-D, Rooney was the first choice after Joel Meyers decided to leave, but was still under contract to the White Sox. I think when he became available this time around, the owners used that as a reason to dump Hagin. The fact that he has worked in St. Louis in the past was also a big factor, I'm sure.

Which one?
I'm a Cards fan in Chicagoland, so I've heard a bit of the Sox broadcasts.  I assume Rooney is the good half of the announcing team (I remember the color guy saying some really dumb stuff).

Rooney
I listen to him quite a bit on White Sox broadcasts. I do like him a lot, and I think the one thing I don't like about him (a certain smugness relative to the quality of the team and its decision-making) will be mitigated by the fact that he'll be working with Shannon instead of Ed Farmer.

I actually kind of liked Wayne, though. I agree with Cardrul--having listened to a lot of other teams' announcers, I've decided that we've been pretty damn spoiled all along.
